Chapter 15 - THE HOSPITAL ESCAPE

Federal agents locked down the hospital.
But Charles had planned years ahead.
Dr. Mercer used an emergency code to move Charles from a secured cardiac room into a surgical corridor.
Two hospital staff members disabled surveillance cameras.
A maintenance elevator opened directly into a loading dock.
By the time agents discovered the switch, Charles was gone.
Dr. Mercer vanished with him.
Nathan received the call while sitting with Lily in a private room near the courthouse.
Lily was drawing again.
He did not let his face change until he stepped into the hallway.
Grace followed.
“He escaped.”
“Yes.”
Grace leaned against the wall.
“How?”
“Hospital access.”
“Mercer.”
Nathan nodded.
Grace looked toward Lily.
“He’ll come for her.”
Nathan hated that she was right.
Federal protection increased immediately.
Nathan wanted Grace and Lily moved out of Illinois.
Grace refused.
“If Charles is still here, I want to know where.”
Nathan did not argue this time.
Instead, he moved them to a high-security corporate residence inside Cole Tower.
The building had independent systems and a security team Nathan had personally vetted.
That evening, Lily asked Nathan to read her a bedtime story.
He sat beside the bed.
Grace watched from the doorway.
Lily interrupted every two pages.
“Why did the bear go in the forest?”
“Because bears live there.”
“But why that forest?”
Nathan looked at Grace.
“Does she always interrogate fiction?”
Grace smiled.
“She gets that from you.”
Nathan continued reading.
By the final page, Lily had fallen asleep against his arm.
Nathan stared at her.
Grace entered quietly.
“You can move.”
“I know.”
“You look trapped.”
“I am.”
Grace smiled.
Nathan whispered.
“I don’t want to wake her.”
Grace pulled a blanket over Lily.
Nathan carefully stood.
They walked into the hall.
For a moment, the crisis felt far away.
Nathan looked at Grace.
“I meant what I said.”
“About what?”
“Earning it.”
Grace knew.
“You don’t have to prove you’re wealthy enough to take care of her.”
“That’s not what I mean.”
“I know.”
Nathan leaned against the wall.
“I missed her first word.”
“Her first step.”
“Her first birthday.”
Grace’s eyes lowered.
“She said ‘mama’ first.”
Nathan smiled.
“Of course.”
“She walked at thirteen months.”
“Toward a plate of cookies.”
Nathan laughed softly.
Grace continued.
“She hated carrots.”
“Still does.”
“She had a stuffed rabbit named Mr. Beans.”
“Had?”
“He disappeared on a bus.”
Nathan looked genuinely devastated.
“That’s tragic.”
“It was.”
“She cried for two days.”
Nathan smiled.
Then the smile faded.
“I should have been there.”
Grace looked at him.
“Yes.”
Nathan accepted it.
She continued.
“But you didn’t choose not to be.”
Nathan’s eyes met hers.
Grace whispered.
“I spent years angry at you.”
“I thought maybe Victoria told me the truth.”
“I thought maybe you knew about Lily and did not care.”
Nathan looked wounded.
“I would never.”
“I know that now.”
Silence settled between them.
Nathan stepped closer.
“Grace.”
An alarm suddenly sounded.
Red lights flashed in the hallway.
Nathan immediately moved toward Lily’s room.
Security announcements filled the building.
FIRE DETECTED - LEVEL THIRTY-NINE.
Grace grabbed Lily from the bed.
Nathan’s residence was on level forty-one.
Security officers arrived.
“Stairwell route.”
They moved toward the emergency stairs.
Nathan stopped.
Smoke was already entering from beneath the door.
A security officer radioed.
“Fire on thirty-nine and forty.”
Nathan frowned.
Two floors.
Simultaneous ignition.
“This isn’t a fire.”
Grace looked at him.
Nathan’s phone buzzed.
Unknown number.
A photograph appeared.
Dr. Mercer stood inside the building’s mechanical control room.
Text followed.
BRING LILY TO LEVEL 38.
NO SECURITY.
OR THE SPRINKLER SYSTEM FILLS THIS FLOOR WITH SOMETHING WORSE THAN WATER.
Nathan showed the officer.
The man immediately contacted hazmat teams.
Grace pulled Lily tighter.
Nathan looked toward the stairwell.
Charles had transformed Cole Tower into a trap.
Then Lily whispered.
“Daddy.”
Nathan crouched.
“What?”
She pointed toward the wall.
“There’s another elevator.”
Nathan frowned.
“The service elevator?”
Lily shook her head.
“Grandpa Robert’s elevator.”
Nathan stared at her.
“How do you know about that?”
Lily looked at Grace.
Grace looked confused.
“I don’t.”
Lily whispered.
“The lady showed me.”
“What lady?”
“The old lady in the picture.”
Nathan’s blood ran cold.
His mother had been dead seven years.
He pulled out his phone and showed Lily a family photograph.
She pointed immediately.
Nathan’s mother.
“That lady.”
Grace stared at Nathan.
Nathan asked.
“When did you see her?”
Lily shook her head.
“Not her.”
“The picture lady showed me.”
Nathan realized.
Victoria.
Victoria had shown Lily a photograph of Nathan’s mother.
Possibly while using the hidden room.
Lily ran toward a decorative wall panel.
She pressed a small brass button beneath a frame.
Nathan heard machinery engage.
A concealed elevator door opened.
Robert had installed a private emergency lift years earlier.
Nathan had forgotten it existed.
They entered.
The elevator descended directly to the underground parking level.
Federal agents evacuated them seconds before smoke filled the upper floors.
Hazmat teams later discovered aerosolized sedatives connected to the sprinkler ventilation system.
Dr. Mercer escaped before authorities reached the control room.
But he left something behind.
A handwritten note.
Nathan recognized Charles’s handwriting.
THANK ROBERT FOR THE ELEVATOR.
HE SAVED MY GRANDDAUGHTER TOO.
Nathan stared at the words.
Grace read them twice.
“Granddaughter?”
Nathan’s face hardened.
“Charles still believes Lily belongs to him.”
Grace shook her head.
“No.”
Nathan looked at her.
Grace’s eyes widened.
“He didn’t write ‘your daughter.’”
“He wrote ‘my granddaughter.’”
Nathan felt the floor shift beneath him again.
“That’s impossible.”
Grace whispered.
May you like
“Unless Victoria isn’t Charles’s only child.”
