Chapter 7 - THE MOTHER WHO RAN

Claire spent the next hour refusing to cry.

It seemed important to her.

Ethan understood why.

For twenty years, other people had controlled every part of her life.

Her room.

Her food.

Her name.

Her future.

Even grief had become something she wanted to own.

Detective Ortiz returned with records from the old airport.

The photograph had been taken by a private investigator.

The investigator’s name was Peter Calloway.

Claire recognized it immediately.

“That was him.”

“Who?”

“The detective who came to the house.”

Ortiz stared.

“Calloway wasn’t police.”

“He told Vivian he was.”

“He was a private investigator.”

“Who hired him?”

Ortiz looked uncomfortable.

“We don’t know.”

Ethan leaned against the wall.

“What happened to him?”

“He disappeared in November 2007.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“I heard him.”

“What?”

“The night he came.”

“He was shouting downstairs.”

“He told Vivian he knew Elizabeth was alive after the crash.”

Ortiz moved closer.

“Do you remember exactly what he said?”

Claire searched twenty years of memory.

“He said…”

She stopped.

Then whispered.

“He said, ‘Elizabeth didn’t abandon her daughter.’”

Ethan straightened.

Claire continued.

“Vivian told him he was too late.”

“Then Grant said something.”

“What?”

“I couldn’t hear all of it.”

“He said my mother had gone to…”

Claire pressed her fingers against her temples.

“Something about a station.”

“A train station?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“Cold.”

Ortiz waited.

Claire’s eyes opened.

“A weather station.”

Silence filled the room.

Marcus immediately searched the region.

“There was a decommissioned atmospheric station near Mount Carrick.”

“How far?”

“Thirty-two miles from the Ashford estate.”

Ortiz made a call.

Within forty minutes, state investigators were headed there.

Claire insisted on going.

Doctors refused.

Ethan expected an argument.

Instead Claire looked at him.

“I waited twenty years.”

“I can wait two hours.”

He understood then that surviving confinement had taught her patience more effectively than any prison could have.

At 4:36 p.m., Ortiz received a call.

Her face changed.

Ethan stood.

“What?”

“They found something.”

Claire’s entire body became rigid.

“Bodies?”

“No.”

“A room.”

The weather station had been abandoned for nearly fifteen years.

Inside a locked underground maintenance section, investigators found old camping supplies.

Maps.

A shortwave radio.

Two passports with false names.

And a cassette recorder.

The recorder contained six tapes.

One was labeled CLAIRE.

Ortiz brought an evidence copy to the hospital after midnight.

Claire sat between Ethan and Marcus while the recording began.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman’s voice spoke.

Claire’s mother.

Even after twenty years, Claire recognized her instantly.

She covered her mouth.

“My baby.”

Elizabeth Bennett’s voice trembled through the speaker.

“If you are hearing this, then I failed to come back.”

Claire began crying.

“I need you to understand something.”

“Your father and I discovered that Jonathan Vale had been stealing from the trust for years.”

“He was not working alone.”

“Vivian knew some of it.”

“But not all.”

Ethan glanced at Claire.

The tape crackled.

“The accident was staged because we believed it would give us time to expose him.”

“But Jonathan found us.”

“Your father was taken.”

“I escaped.”

Claire whispered.

“Dad.”

Elizabeth continued.

“I wanted to come for you.”

“I swear I did.”

“But Vivian told me they would kill you if I came near the house.”

Claire’s hands shook.

Then her mother said the sentence that changed everything again.

May you like

“Vivian was supposed to hide you for three days.”

“Not twenty years.”
