Chapter 16 - RETURN TO THE WALL

The Ashford mansion had been sealed by investigators after the fire.

That made it perfect for Melissa.

Empty.

Dark.

Familiar.

Claire stood at the gates at 11:52 p.m.

Snow covered the driveway.

Ethan stood beside her.

“You don’t have to enter.”

“Yes.”

“We can let tactical teams handle it.”

“No.”

“Claire.”

She looked at the mansion.

“I walked out once because you opened the door.”

“This time I walk in because I choose to.”

Ethan stopped arguing.

The archive they carried was fake.

Marcus had prepared duplicate drives.

Federal teams surrounded the property beyond sight.

No one knew whether Samuel was inside.

Claire and Ethan entered.

The foyer was black.

A single lantern burned on the staircase.

Melissa’s voice came through the house speaker.

“Welcome back.”

Claire looked upward.

“You always were good at hiding.”

Melissa laughed.

“Coming from you?”

“Where are my parents?”

“East wing.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

They climbed.

The burned corridor smelled of wet wood and ash.

Claire’s former room stood open.

Inside, Daniel and Elizabeth were bound to chairs.

Melissa stood behind them holding a pistol.

Samuel Hale stood beside the boarded window.

Ethan stared at his uncle.

Samuel smiled sadly.

“You should have listened.”

Ethan set the case down.

“Let them go.”

Samuel looked toward Claire.

“So that is the famous dead girl.”

Claire did not flinch.

“That is the famous coward who needed a five-year-old locked away to protect his money.”

Samuel’s smile vanished.

Melissa laughed.

“I like her better outside the wall.”

Elizabeth struggled against the ropes.

“Claire, leave.”

Melissa pressed the gun toward her.

“Quiet.”

Claire stepped forward.

“What happened to Jonathan Vale?”

Samuel answered.

“Heart attack.”

Daniel shook his head.

“You poisoned him.”

Samuel shrugged.

“He had become sentimental.”

Claire looked at Melissa.

“And you?”

Melissa’s smile tightened.

“I married Grant because Samuel told me to.”

Grant had been a target too.

A way into the Ashford family.

Melissa had monitored the house.

Managed servants.

Controlled information.

And prepared Claire’s death once the last trust transfer was complete.

“The fire was early,” Samuel said.

Melissa glared.

“You were taking too long.”

“You nearly exposed us.”

“We’re exposed anyway.”

Their alliance was cracking.

Ethan noticed.

He moved slightly toward Daniel.

Samuel raised his weapon.

“Don’t.”

Claire looked around the room that had held her for two decades.

The tally marks remained visible beneath the smoke stains.

Twenty rows.

Twenty stolen years.

Then she noticed something else.

The old service vent.

As a child, she had learned that voices traveled through it.

So did sound.

She looked at Ethan.

Three knocks.

Tap.

Tap.

Tap.

His eyes changed.

He understood.

Claire stepped backward and knocked three times against the wall.

Marcus’s team, listening through a microphone hidden in Ethan’s coat, received the signal.

Samuel heard it too.

“What was that?”

Claire smiled.

“The sound that ruined your life.”

The windows exploded inward.

Federal tactical officers entered from both sides.

Melissa fired.

Ethan tackled Claire.

Samuel grabbed Elizabeth.

Daniel threw himself from the chair despite his bound hands.

Chaos filled the room.

A shot struck the ceiling.

Another hit the wall.

Melissa ran toward the service corridor.

Claire saw her.

For one second, she could let her disappear.

Then Claire stood.

“Melissa!”

Melissa turned.

Claire walked toward her former cell.

“You wanted me back in here.”

Melissa raised the gun.

May you like

Claire did not stop.

“Here I am.”
