Chapter 4 - THE ASHFORD WIFE

Melissa ran.

Grant chased her.

Vivian shouted his name.

Ethan ignored all of them.

Claire could barely stand.

He wrapped one arm around her waist and led her toward the main stairs.

Fire suppression sprinklers exploded overhead.

Water poured from the ceiling.

Claire screamed when it touched her.

Not because it hurt.

Because she had not felt rain in twenty years.

For one impossible second, she stopped moving.

Water streamed over her face.

She lifted both hands.

Ethan looked at her.

“Claire.”

She stared at the falling water.

“I forgot.”

“What?”

“What rain felt like.”

Smoke rolled behind them.

Ethan tightened his grip.

“You can remember outside.”

They descended.

Servants fled through the foyer.

Grant reappeared near the kitchen.

“Melissa is gone.”

Vivian slapped him.

The sound cracked through the chaos.

“You married a lunatic.”

Grant stared at her.

“You chose her.”

Vivian’s face revealed something.

Claire noticed.

“What does that mean?”

Nobody answered.

Then headlights flooded the front windows.

Black SUVs.

Ethan’s security detail.

Relief crossed his face.

The front doors opened.

Four men entered.

At the center was Marcus Reed, Ethan’s chief of security.

Former military.

Former federal protection detail.

A man who rarely appeared surprised.

Tonight he did.

His gaze landed on Claire.

Then the smoke.

Then Grant’s gun.

“Put it down.”

Grant hesitated.

Marcus’s men drew weapons.

Grant dropped the pistol.

“Police are seven minutes out,” Marcus said.

Vivian looked at Ethan.

“You’ve made a catastrophic mistake.”

Ethan guided Claire toward the entrance.

“No.”

“I opened a door.”

Vivian stepped in front of them.

Claire recoiled.

Ethan moved between the women.

Vivian lowered her voice.

“Claire, listen to me.”

Claire looked around Ethan’s shoulder.

“Aunt Vivian.”

The name sounded like something rotten in her mouth.

“You cannot leave.”

Claire stared at her.

Vivian softened her tone.

“The outside world is not what you think.”

“I don’t know what I think.”

“You have no education.”

“I taught myself.”

“No legal identity.”

“You stole it.”

“No friends.”

“You made sure of that.”

“No understanding of money.”

Claire’s voice strengthened.

“You took mine.”

Vivian’s face tightened.

Claire stepped out from behind Ethan.

Twenty years of fear stood between them.

Then Claire did something simple.

She walked past her aunt.

Vivian reached for her.

Ethan caught Vivian’s wrist.

“Don’t.”

Claire crossed the threshold.

Cold December rain blew beneath the portico.

She stopped outside.

The world seemed enormous.

Trees moved in the wind.

Clouds raced above her.

Police lights appeared down the mountain road.

Claire began crying silently.

Ethan did not touch her.

He allowed her the moment.

Behind them, Vivian whispered.

“You still don’t understand.”

Claire turned.

Vivian’s face looked suddenly ancient.

“Your parents were not killed in an accident.”

Claire stopped breathing.

Vivian continued.

“And I was not the one who killed them.”

Grant stared at his mother.

“Mom.”

Vivian ignored him.

“She was supposed to die with them.”

Claire’s knees nearly gave way.

Ethan caught her.

May you like

Vivian looked toward the burning east wing.

“Keeping her hidden was the only reason she survived.”
