Chapter 15 - THE MAN WHO BUILT ETHAN

Ethan answered.

“Samuel.”

His uncle’s voice came calmly through the speaker.

“You found the room.”

“Yes.”

“I was afraid you would.”

Claire watched Ethan’s face.

“Where are you?”

“Far enough away.”

“Did you authorize this?”

A pause.

“I authorized containment.”

“Claire’s murder?”

“I did not use that word.”

“You signed the document.”

“I signed thousands of documents.”

Ethan laughed without humor.

“Now you sound like Vivian.”

Samuel sighed.

“Ethan, you built something extraordinary.”

“Don’t let one dead lawyer’s mistakes destroy it.”

“Claire is not a mistake.”

“No.”

“She is a liability.”

Claire’s expression changed.

Ethan’s voice became ice.

“Say that again.”

Samuel paused.

Then understood too late that Ethan was recording.

“You always were dramatic.”

“You knew about the Bennett assets.”

“I knew some property histories were complicated.”

“You placed Vale in front of me.”

“I introduced you to opportunities.”

“You used my company.”

“I helped your company survive.”

Ethan remembered 2012.

Hale Infrastructure had been near bankruptcy.

Then three miraculous land acquisitions produced enormous returns.

Samuel had arranged them.

Ethan had believed his uncle saved him.

Now he understood who had paid.

Claire.

Samuel continued.

“Do you think empires are built from clean hands?”

“I think you mistook mine for yours.”

“Ethan.”

“You’re done.”

Samuel laughed.

“You cannot remove me.”

“I control voting trusts.”

“Not anymore.”

Silence.

Ethan had quietly restructured corporate voting authority two years earlier.

Samuel had never known.

“I can remove you before lunch.”

Samuel’s breathing changed.

“You would destroy your own family for a woman you met three days ago?”

Ethan looked at Claire.

“No.”

“I would destroy a criminal conspiracy for a woman your friends buried alive for twenty years.”

Samuel hung up.

Marcus immediately began tracing the call.

It bounced through Europe.

Then Canada.

Then Vermont.

Elizabeth heard Vermont and went pale.

“What?”

She looked at Daniel.

“There was another safe property.”

“Whose?”

“Vale’s.”

“Where?”

“Near Briar Glen.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why would Samuel go back there?”

Daniel answered.

“He wouldn’t.”

Claire understood first.

“Melissa.”

They raced to check security feeds from Claire’s parents’ safe location.

The feed went black.

Ortiz called.

No response from the protection team.

Claire stood.

“My parents.”

Ethan grabbed his coat.

Marcus stopped him.

“We don’t know what we’re walking into.”

“We know enough.”

Federal agents converged on the property.

Too late.

Two officers were unconscious but alive.

Daniel and Elizabeth were gone.

On the dining table sat a phone.

It rang.

Claire answered.

Melissa’s voice came through.

“Hello, ghost.”

Claire’s face hardened.

“Where are they?”

“Alive.”

“For now.”

“What do you want?”

“The archive.”

Ethan shook his head.

Claire ignored him.

“Where?”

Melissa laughed.

“You know where.”

Claire looked toward Ethan.

The Ashford mansion.

The place behind the wall.

Melissa continued.

“Midnight.”

“Bring Ethan Hale.”

“Bring the archive.”

“And Claire?”

May you like

Melissa paused.

“Come home.”
