Chapter 12 - HER MOTHER’S SECOND NAME

Elizabeth Bennett had used the alias Eleanor Harbor for nine years.
Financial records connected that identity to safe houses in Maine, Vermont, Quebec, and Massachusetts.
The last known transaction occurred six months earlier.
Claire stared at the documents.
“My mother is alive.”
Ortiz corrected her gently.
“We know the identity was used.”
“That doesn’t prove who used it.”
Claire understood.
Someone could have stolen the alias.
Someone could be laying another trail.
Then Marcus found a security image from a pharmacy in Burlington.
The woman buying medication was older.
Her hair was gray.
Her face thinner.
But Claire recognized her.
“My mother.”
The image had been captured eight months earlier.
Ethan looked at the medication list.
Heart medication.
Antibiotics.
Insulin.
Claire frowned.
“My mother wasn’t diabetic.”
“The prescriptions may not have been for her.”
Ortiz studied the receipts.
One item had been paid for using an old prepaid card.
The card had been registered to a marina.
They traced it to Lake Champlain.
By afternoon, federal agents surrounded a weather-beaten boathouse near the Canadian border.
Claire watched remotely.
An agent entered.
Then another.
Minutes passed.
Finally Ortiz received confirmation.
Two people were inside.
One elderly man.
One elderly woman.
Both alive.
Claire stopped breathing.
The video connection activated.
A woman appeared seated at a wooden table.
Gray hair.
Sunken cheeks.
Tears already falling.
Claire stared.
The woman whispered.
“Claire?”
Twenty years collapsed.
Claire could not speak.
Elizabeth Bennett covered her mouth.
“My baby.”
Claire stood so quickly the chair fell backward.
“Don’t.”
Elizabeth froze.
“Don’t call me that.”
The words struck harder than shouting.
Elizabeth lowered her hands.
Claire’s breathing shook.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew where I was.”
“Yes.”
“You left me there.”
Elizabeth began crying.
“I tried—”
“For twenty years?”
“No.”
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“You married him.”
“Yes.”
“You let the world think I was dead.”
“I was trying to keep your father alive.”
Claire stared.
Then the camera shifted.
A man appeared behind Elizabeth.
Thin.
White-haired.
Walking with a cane.
Claire stared at him.
Daniel Bennett.
Her father.
Older by two decades.
Alive.
He looked directly into the camera.
Then his face crumpled.
“Starshine.”
Claire made a sound Ethan would remember for the rest of his life.
Half sob.
Half gasp.
A childhood name she had not heard since she was five.
Daniel approached the screen.
“I’m sorry.”
Claire dropped into the chair.
“You were alive.”
“Yes.”
“For all of it?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“Not free.”
Elizabeth took his hand.
The story came slowly.
Jonathan Vale had held Daniel at Saint Orison for ten years.
Elizabeth remained close to Vale because he threatened to kill Daniel if she exposed him.
She married Vale under a secret agreement.
She gathered evidence.
She moved money away from his network.
In 2014, she learned where Daniel was being held.
She disappeared.
For two years she planned his escape.
In 2016, with the help of a nurse, she removed Daniel from Saint Orison.
They had been hiding ever since.
Claire listened in disbelief.
Then asked the only question that mattered.
“Why didn’t you come for me?”
Daniel looked at Elizabeth.
Elizabeth could not answer.
Claire leaned toward the screen.
“Why?”
Daniel finally spoke.
“Because we thought you were dead.”
Claire went still.
Elizabeth sobbed.
“Vivian told us you died in 2012.”
Claire stared at the screen.
“She lied to everyone.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
“Not everyone.”
“What do you mean?”
“Jonathan received proof you were alive every year.”
Claire’s face changed.
“From who?”
May you like
Daniel’s answer was barely audible.
“Grant.”
