Chapter 5 - THE SECOND PERSON

Mark showed the message to Detective Hale.

Hale’s response was immediate.

“You are not going anywhere alone.”

Daniel had sent an address for an abandoned construction site owned by Caldwell Commercial Properties.

Police set up quietly several blocks away.

Mark agreed to wear a recording device.

Sarah hated every second of it.

“You don’t have to do this.”

Mark looked at Noah sleeping in Elena’s arms.

“Yes, I do.”

“Because she’s my sister?”

“Because I spent years pretending family loyalty was more important than asking hard questions.”

He looked at Sarah.

“That ends tonight.”

Mark entered the unfinished building shortly after midnight.

Daniel stood beneath a temporary work light.

No Brenda.

“Where is she?”

Daniel raised his hands.

“Relax.”

“You said you found her.”

“I know where she is.”

“Then tell me.”

Daniel smiled strangely.

“First, I need to know what your father told you.”

Mark stayed still.

“About what?”

“The ledger.”

Sarah listened from inside an unmarked police vehicle.

Detective Hale sat beside her wearing headphones.

Daniel continued.

“William kept a private ledger.”

“He documented every payment.”

“Every transfer.”

“Every person involved.”

“Brenda thinks you have it.”

“I don’t.”

Daniel studied him.

“Then Sarah does.”

Mark’s expression hardened.

“Stay away from my wife.”

Daniel laughed softly.

“You still don’t understand.”

“Brenda isn’t the only one with something to lose.”

Police moved in before Daniel could say more.

He ran.

He made it less than fifty yards before officers surrounded him.

Daniel was arrested.

But Brenda was nowhere nearby.

During questioning, Daniel denied helping Brenda contaminate Noah’s bottle.

He admitted assisting her with financial transfers.

He also admitted warning her when William discovered the missing money.

But he insisted the plan had changed after William’s death.

“What plan?” Detective Hale asked.

Daniel stared at the table.

“You should ask Brenda.”

“She isn’t here.”

Daniel smiled bitterly.

“She won’t be easy to find.”

“Why?”

“Because she prepared for this years ago.”

Sarah watched through the observation room window.

Hale leaned forward.

“What did she prepare for?”

Daniel looked toward the glass.

“For the day her father finally chose someone else over her.”

Sarah felt cold.

Later, Daniel’s phone was searched.

Investigators found dozens of deleted messages between him and Brenda.

One message stood out.

IF SARAH SIGNS, WE DON’T NEED TO TOUCH THE CHILD.

Sarah read it twice.

“What was I supposed to sign?”

Mark looked equally confused.

Detective Hale answered.

“We found an attachment.”

It was a legal document.

A trust disclaimer.

If Sarah signed it as Noah’s guardian, she would surrender certain claims and control rights connected to William’s estate.

Another clause allowed a temporary family trustee to assume control under specific circumstances.

The proposed trustee was Brenda Caldwell.

Sarah’s hands trembled.

“She wanted the money.”

Hale nodded.

“And if you refused to sign, apparently she had another plan.”

Sarah looked at Mark.

“Did Brenda ever give me papers after your father died?”

Mark went pale.

“The memorial dinner.”

Sarah remembered.

Brenda had brought a stack of “routine estate forms.”

Sarah had refused to sign because her attorney was not present.

Brenda had laughed.

Called Sarah paranoid.

Sarah suddenly understood.

That refusal might have saved Noah’s inheritance.

But it also might have made them targets.

Then Detective Hale’s phone rang.

He listened.

His expression changed.

“What is it?” Sarah asked.

He ended the call.

“We found Brenda’s car.”

“Where?”

“Near the state line.”

Sarah stood.

“Was she inside?”

Hale shook his head.

May you like

“No.”

“But there was blood on the driver’s seat.”
