Chapter 14 - THE OFFICE SIEGE
Robert entered Caldwell Commercial Properties shortly before closing.
Most employees had already left.
Three remained.
He locked the main doors.
Then he called Mark.
Sarah watched Mark answer from the police station.
“Uncle Robert.”
“Come to the office.”
Robert’s voice sounded calm.
Too calm.
“I know you’re listening with police.”
Mark said nothing.
Robert continued.
“I don’t care.”
“What do you want?”
“The cemetery files.”
Mark looked at Detective Hale.
Robert knew about the evidence.
“How?”
Robert laughed softly.
“Your father was never as clever as he believed.”
“Release the employees.”
“Bring me the files.”
“They’re already with police.”
A long silence.
“Then bring copies.”
“And what happens after that?”
“You and I talk.”
Mark’s jaw tightened.
“About Mom?”
Robert said nothing.
Mark pushed.
“Did you help Brenda kill her?”
Sarah watched his hands tremble.
Robert finally responded.
“Your sister was always emotional.”
“That isn’t an answer.”
“Your mother made mistakes.”
“Did you help cover it up?”
Another pause.
“Yes.”
Mark closed his eyes.
Sarah gripped his shoulder.
Robert continued.
“I thought I was protecting Brenda.”
“She was twenty-one.”
“She panicked.”
“What did she do?”
Robert’s voice became quieter.
“She wanted Catherine frightened.”
“She interfered with the car.”
“She swore she never intended the crash.”
Sarah felt sick.
Mark whispered, “And you covered it up.”
“She was my niece.”
“She was my sister.”
Robert snapped.
“Your mother was going to destroy the family.”
“No.”
Mark’s voice strengthened.
“She was going to expose thieves.”
Robert became silent.
Police recorded everything.
Mark continued.
“And my father?”
Robert laughed once.
“William spent seventeen years blaming himself.”
“Then that investigator started digging.”
“Did you kill him?”
“I didn’t have to.”
“Brenda handled William.”
Sarah closed her eyes.
Mark looked shattered.
“You’re saying Brenda killed Dad?”
“I’m saying she visited him.”
“I’m saying William was alive before she arrived and dead the next morning.”
The call suddenly ended.
Inside the office, Robert became agitated.
He apparently realized he had said too much.
Police tactical teams prepared to enter.
Then one employee escaped through a side window.
He told officers Robert was searching William’s old executive office.
“He keeps asking about a blue ledger.”
The ledger.
The document Daniel had mentioned.
Sarah remembered Avery saying William documented every transfer.
“What if Robert thinks the ledger is still there?”
Mark said.
Detective Hale nodded.
“Then we use that.”
Police contacted Robert again.
Mark claimed he had the ledger.
Robert demanded a meeting.
Hale planned a controlled exchange.
Sarah refused to let Mark go alone.
“You stay here.”
Mark looked at her.
“Absolutely not.”
“This is between me and Robert.”
“No.”
“This became my fight when Brenda put that packet in Noah’s bottle.”
Hale intervened.
“Sarah is not going in.”
Sarah opened her mouth.
“No argument.”
She glared at him.
Hale continued.
“But Mark isn’t going in either.”
Instead, police delivered a sealed evidence box through the building entrance.
Robert came downstairs to retrieve it.
The moment he stepped into the lobby, officers moved.
Robert fired once into the ceiling.
Then froze when he saw six weapons trained on him.
He surrendered.
No one was injured.
Sarah expected relief.
Instead, Robert smiled as police placed him in handcuffs.
Mark asked, “Why are you smiling?”
Robert looked directly at him.
“Because Brenda still has the ledger.”
Mark froze.

“And if you think she surrendered because she was scared of me, you still don’t understand your sister.”
