Chapter 12 - DOUBT

Sarah hated herself for even considering Brenda’s accusation.

Elena had saved Noah.

That was indisputable.

But Brenda’s words planted a question.

Why had Elena started recording?

Elena had explained that Brenda looked suspicious.

That explanation still made sense.

Yet Sarah had learned what happened when warning signs were ignored.

So she asked.

“Elena, I need you to tell me again.”

Elena looked hurt.

“About the video?”

“Yes.”

“Why were you recording before Brenda opened the bottle?”

Elena stared at Sarah for several seconds.

Then she sat down.

“Because it wasn’t the first time.”

Sarah’s heart skipped.

“What?”

Elena opened her phone.

She searched through older files.

Then she showed Sarah another video.

It was filmed eleven days earlier.

Brenda stood in Noah’s nursery while Sarah was downstairs.

She opened a drawer.

She searched through documents.

Then she photographed Noah’s birth certificate.

Sarah looked up.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I told Mark.”

The room changed.

Sarah slowly turned toward her husband.

Mark looked stunned.

“I don’t remember that.”

Elena’s expression hardened.

“I showed you.”

“When?”

“The morning after I recorded it.”

“You said Brenda was family and probably needed information for the estate.”

Mark’s face drained.

Sarah closed her eyes.

Of course.

Another warning.

Another decision Mark had made for everyone else.

“I deleted the original after you told me not to create drama,” Elena said.

“But it stayed in my cloud backup.”

Mark whispered, “Elena, I am sorry.”

“This isn’t about me.”

She pointed toward Noah.

“It is about him.”

Sarah walked out of the room.

Mark followed.

“Sarah.”

“No.”

“I made a mistake.”

“You made the same mistake repeatedly.”

“I trusted my sister.”

“You trusted your comfort.”

Mark went silent.

Sarah turned toward him.

“You didn’t want to believe Brenda was dangerous because believing it would require you to act.”

“That is different.”

“No, Mark.”

“It isn’t.”

She wiped tears from her face.

“I cannot protect Noah while also protecting you from uncomfortable truths.”

Mark looked devastated.

Sarah continued.

“So from this moment forward, you tell me everything.”

“No omissions.”

“No decisions made for me.”

“No family secrets.”

“Everything.”

Mark nodded.

“Everything.”

He reached into his jacket.

“Then I need to show you this.”

He handed Sarah a key.

“What is it?”

“My father’s private office.”

“I thought police searched it.”

“They searched the office.”

“They did not search the floor safe.”

Sarah stared at him.

“You knew about a safe?”

“I knew Dad had one.”

“Did you tell Detective Hale?”

Mark’s silence answered.

Sarah almost laughed from disbelief.

“Call him.”

They went to William’s office with police that evening.

The safe was hidden beneath the rug.

Mark entered the code.

Catherine’s birthday.

Inside were three envelopes.

One was addressed to Mark.

One to Noah.

One to Sarah.

Sarah opened hers.

The first line made her sit down.

Sarah, if you are reading this, Mark probably waited too long to tell you the truth.

Even in death, William had known his son.

Sarah continued reading.

There is one person I trust completely with Noah.

It is not Mark.

It is Elena.

Sarah looked across the room.

Elena stood frozen.

Beneath the letter was a legal document.

William had named Elena as an emergency co-guardian of Noah’s trust if both Sarah and Mark became unable to act.

Mark stared at her.

“Why would Dad do that?”

Elena’s eyes filled with tears.

“I don’t know.”

Then Detective Hale opened the third envelope.

Inside was a photograph.

William.

Elena.
