Chapter 1 - THE GREY POWDER

Sarah stared at the pale grey dust scattered across the kitchen tile.
For several seconds, she could not breathe.
Her eight-month-old son, Noah, sat strapped into his high chair only a few feet away, kicking his tiny feet and reaching innocently toward the bottle Elena had knocked from Sarah’s hand.
Ten seconds earlier, Sarah had been furious.
Now her knees felt weak.
“Elena, tell me exactly what happened.”
Elena was still shaking.
She had worked for Sarah and Mark for almost three years, first helping with the house and later staying on after Noah was born.
Sarah had never seen her look this frightened.
“I came into the kitchen because I heard the cabinet close.”
Elena pointed toward the hallway.
“Brenda was standing beside the counter.”
Sarah swallowed.
“Mark’s sister?”
Elena nodded.
“She had something in her hand.”
“She saw me and pushed it into her purse.”
“I thought it was strange, but I didn’t want to accuse her without proof.”
Sarah looked at Noah.
He smiled at her.
That innocent smile nearly broke her.
“What happened next?”
“You walked in from the patio.”
“Brenda hugged you.”
“While you were talking, I saw her reach toward Noah’s bottle.”
Elena picked up her phone.
“I started recording.”
She opened the video.
Sarah watched Brenda stand beside the island.
Brenda glanced toward the patio door.
Once.
Then again.
She removed a small packet from her pocket.
She opened Noah’s bottle.
And she emptied the contents inside.
Sarah pressed a hand over her mouth.
“No.”
Elena moved closer.
“There’s more.”
In the video, Brenda twisted the cap back onto the bottle.
Then she shook it.
Sarah felt sick.
Her sister-in-law had kissed Noah on the forehead less than fifteen minutes later.
She had called him her “favorite little nephew.”
She had smiled.
She had asked Sarah whether Noah was finally drinking more milk.
Sarah looked down at the grey powder.
“What is it?”
“I don’t know.”
Elena’s voice was quiet.
“And we are not touching it.”
Sarah immediately grabbed Noah from the high chair.
“Call emergency services.”
“I already did.”
Sirens became audible outside.
Sarah’s heart pounded faster.
Then another thought struck her.
“Where is Brenda?”
Elena’s expression changed.
“I thought she was in the guest bathroom.”
They both looked toward the hallway.
The house was silent.
Sarah rushed toward the foyer.
The front door stood open.
Brenda’s car was gone.
“She ran.”
Elena nodded.
“She must have realized I stopped you.”
Sarah pulled Noah tighter against her chest.
Then her phone rang.
MARK.
Sarah answered immediately.
“Mark, you need to come home.”
“What happened?”
His voice was cheerful.
It made what Sarah had to say feel even more impossible.
“It’s Brenda.”
Silence.
“What about Brenda?”
Sarah looked at Elena’s phone.
“She put something in Noah’s bottle.”
Mark did not answer.
For almost five seconds, there was nothing but traffic noise through the phone.
Then he spoke.
“That doesn’t make sense.”
“I watched her do it.”
“Sarah, Brenda would never hurt Noah.”
Sarah’s fear turned into anger.
“She poured an unknown grey powder into our son’s milk.”
“Maybe it was formula.”
“Elena recorded everything.”
Another pause.
Then Mark said something that made Sarah go cold.
“Don’t call the police yet.”
Sarah slowly lowered the phone.
“What did you just say?”
“I’m on my way.”
“No, Mark.”
Her voice hardened.
“The police are already coming.”
Mark exhaled sharply.
“Sarah, you don’t understand.”
“What don’t I understand?”
Before Mark could answer, police vehicles stopped outside.
Elena stepped closer to Sarah.

And Mark whispered four words that changed everything.
“My father changed the will.”
