Chapter 20 - The Black Crown

The photograph showed Marcus and Khloe leaving a small restaurant in Boston.

It had been taken nearly two years earlier.

Khloe was not pregnant.

Isabella was not part of their daily lives.

Julian Mercer had not yet launched his campaign against Atlas Meridian.

Nothing about the later conspiracy had begun.

Yet someone had been watching them.

David found eleven more photographs.

Khloe visiting Samuel.

Marcus meeting his estate attorney.

Diane leaving a family trust office.

Marcus and Khloe touring a house they ultimately decided not to purchase.

Every file contained the same black crown symbol.

Marcus stared at the screen.

“Who uses it?”

David had spent hours searching.

“No registered company.”

“No recognized intelligence firm.”

“No known investigative agency.”

Khloe looked closer.

“What about private groups?”

“Possibly.”

Samuel arrived at the house before sunrise.

He saw the symbol and stopped walking.

Khloe noticed.

“You know it.”

Samuel did not answer.

Marcus stood.

“Samuel.”

The older man stared at the black crown.

His face had changed.

Not confusion.

Recognition.

Khloe’s voice sharpened.

“Uncle Samuel.”

He finally looked at her.

“I haven’t seen that mark in thirty years.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“Where?”

Samuel sat down slowly.

“Your grandfather.”

Khloe froze.

“My grandfather?”

Diane had rarely spoken about her father.

Charles Vale had died when Khloe was a child.

The official story was simple.

Investment banker.

Private man.

Heart attack.

Samuel rubbed one hand over his face.

“Our father was involved with a group of investors during the final years of his life.”

“What group?”

Khloe asked.

“They called themselves Crown Consortium.”

Marcus looked at David.

David was already searching.

Nothing appeared.

Samuel continued.

“They financed companies before public markets knew those companies existed.”

“Energy.”

“Defense.”

“Pharmaceuticals.”

“Telecommunications.”

“They believed family control created weakness.”

Marcus frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“They targeted heirs.”

“Marriages.”

“Inheritance structures.”

“They manipulated family disputes to gain leverage.”

Khloe looked at him in disbelief.

“And my grandfather worked with them?”

“At first.”

Samuel answered.

“Then he tried to leave.”

“What happened?”

Samuel’s silence lasted too long.

Diane entered the living room.

She had heard the final sentence.

“He didn’t die from a heart attack.”

Khloe turned.

“What?”

Diane closed the door.

Marcus looked between them.

“What are you saying?”

Diane’s eyes were filled with a fear Khloe had never seen before.

“Your grandfather discovered Crown was using confidential family information to seize control of companies.”

“He threatened to expose them.”

Khloe stood.

“And?”

“One week later, he died.”

Samuel looked at his sister.

“We never proved anything.”

Diane answered.

“No.”

“But Father left something.”

Khloe stared at her mother.

“What did he leave?”

Diane walked toward the fireplace.

“There was a locked box.”

“You told me it contained family papers.”

“It did.”

“What kind?”

Diane looked at Marcus.

“Names.”

“Accounts.”

“Companies.”

Samuel went pale.

“You still have it?”

Diane nodded.

“I moved it after Khloe’s wedding.”

“Where?”

“A private vault.”

Marcus looked toward the image of the black crown.

“Why would anyone care now?”

Diane looked at Khloe.

“Because of your marriage.”

Khloe’s confusion deepened.

“My marriage?”

Diane nodded.

“Charles Vale’s granddaughter married Alexander Thorne’s son.”

Marcus went still.

Samuel understood first.

“The Thorne family.”

Diane looked at him.

“Yes.”

Marcus’s voice became low.

“What did my father have to do with Crown?”

No one answered.

That silence gave him the answer.

Something.

Khloe looked from Marcus to her mother.

“Tell us.”

Diane opened her bag.

She removed a small brass key.

“I wanted to wait until Amelia was older.”

Khloe stared at it.

“Wait for what?”

“For you to decide whether you wanted the truth.”

Khloe almost laughed.

“After everything that happened, you’re still asking whether I want the truth?”

Diane lowered her hand.

“You’re right.”

Marcus looked toward David.

“Can we get to the vault?”

Diane nodded.

“It’s in Boston.”

“When can we go?”

“Today.”

A sound came from the baby monitor.

Amelia was waking.

Khloe looked toward the nursery.

For a moment, every conspiracy and every hidden enemy became secondary.

She walked upstairs.

Marcus followed.

Amelia lay inside her crib, blinking beneath the soft morning light.

Khloe lifted her.

Marcus touched the baby’s tiny cheek.

Their daughter had survived.

Their marriage had survived.

Julian Mercer’s plan had failed.

Isabella’s obsession had been exposed.

The people who attacked them were facing prison.

But now Khloe understood something worse.

The gala had not started the danger.

It had only revealed it.

Her phone vibrated.

Unknown number.

Marcus saw it.

“Don’t answer.”

Khloe looked at the screen.

A photograph appeared instead.

It showed the front of their house.

Taken minutes earlier.

Marcus immediately turned toward the window.

Security officers were already moving outside.

Then a message appeared beneath the photograph.

THE ROSSI WOMAN WAS CARELESS.

MERCER WAS GREEDY.

YOU STILL BELIEVE THEY STARTED THIS.

Khloe’s arms tightened around Amelia.

Another message arrived.

ASK DIANE WHAT CHARLES VALE STOLE FROM US.

Marcus looked toward Khloe’s mother downstairs.

Then the final message appeared.

THE BLACK CROWN ALWAYS COLLECTS ITS DEBTS.

Outside, a black sedan turned slowly at the far end of the street.

David shouted into his radio.

Security vehicles moved.

The sedan accelerated.

Marcus stepped toward the window.

Khloe stopped him.

“No.”

He turned.

She held Amelia against her chest.

“We do this together.”

Marcus looked at his wife.

Not the woman he once thought he needed to protect from every ugly truth.

Not the woman Isabella believed could be frightened away.

Not the woman Julian Mercer had studied for weaknesses.

He saw the woman who had survived them all.

He nodded.

“Together.”

Downstairs, Diane still held the brass key.

Samuel stared at the black crown symbol on David’s screen.

And somewhere inside a private Boston vault waited the secret Charles Vale had died protecting.

A secret connected to Marcus’s father.

A secret powerful enough to make someone watch Khloe for years.

A secret that had survived betrayal, death, and an attack meant to destroy the Thorne family.

The first war had ended.

May you like

The real one was only beginning.
