Chapter 11 - Caleb’s Laptop

Caleb Dunn was arrested before sunrise.
His laptop contained enough information to turn a criminal case into something much larger.
There were maps of the hospital.
Photographs of service elevators.
Copies of gala schedules.
Security rotations.
Floor plans.
And a folder titled FAMILY PRESSURE.
Inside were hundreds of documents.
Khloe’s interviews.
Marcus’s business calendar.
Medical appointment dates.
Old photographs.
Property records.
Even summaries of arguments Marcus and Khloe had held inside their own home.
Khloe stared at the reports.
“How did they know this?”
David looked uncomfortable.
“Someone inside your household security staff was leaking information.”
Marcus turned.
“Who?”
“We’re checking.”
Khloe opened another file.
One sentence had been highlighted.
KHLOE’S PRIMARY EMOTIONAL FEAR: MARCUS REPEATING HIS FATHER’S INFIDELITY.
She looked at Marcus.
The room went silent.
Marcus’s father, Alexander Thorne, had destroyed his own marriage through years of affairs.
Khloe knew the history.
It was one of the reasons Isabella’s behavior affected her so deeply.
Someone had discovered that fear.
Then they had built a campaign around it.
Khloe kept reading.
SUBJECT RESPONDS STRONGLY TO PUBLIC HUMILIATION.
SUBJECT LIKELY TO WITHDRAW RATHER THAN CONFRONT.
SUBJECT’S PREGNANCY INCREASES DESIRE FOR STABILITY.
Marcus closed the laptop.
“That’s enough.”
Khloe reopened it.
“No.”
“You don’t need to read this.”
“Yes, I do.”
“Why?”
“Because someone studied me like a target.”
She looked directly at him.
“I want to know what they thought would break me.”
Marcus stepped back.
She continued reading.
Another document described Isabella’s role.
PHASE ONE: SOCIAL PROXIMITY.
PHASE TWO: IMPLIED INTIMACY WITH MARCUS.
PHASE THREE: MANUFACTURED PUBLIC INCIDENT.
PHASE FOUR: MARITAL SEPARATION.
The final line was incomplete.
PHASE FIVE: IF REQUIRED—
Nothing followed.
Khloe stared at the dash.
“What was phase five?”
David looked toward Marcus.
“We don’t know.”
Samuel entered.
“I might.”
Everyone turned.
He held an envelope.
“This was delivered to my office anonymously.”
Marcus took it.
Inside was a printed email.
The sender address belonged to Julian Mercer’s chief strategist.
The message read:
IF MARITAL SEPARATION FAILS, HEALTH EVENT CREATES SAME VOTING DISRUPTION.
Khloe felt the blood leave her face.
Marcus stared at the sentence.
“Health event.”
Samuel nodded.
“A vague phrase.”
“No.”
Khloe whispered.
“Not vague.”
She looked at the hospital photographs.
They had studied emergency rooms.
Medical schedules.
Pregnancy.
Security access.
Marcus’s voice became hard.
“They were planning to hurt you before the gala.”
David answered carefully.
“We cannot yet prove Mercer knew the nature of the health event.”
Marcus looked at him.
“I don’t care what we can prove privately.”
Khloe interrupted.
“But the court will.”
Marcus turned toward her.
She continued.
“So we prove it.”
A nurse entered.
“Mrs. Thorne, your mother is here.”
Khloe blinked.
“My mother?”
Marcus looked surprised too.
Khloe’s mother, Diane Vale, had been traveling in Europe when the attack happened.
She had taken the first flight home.
Seconds later, Diane entered.
She crossed the room and wrapped her arms carefully around her daughter.
For several moments, neither woman spoke.
Then Diane pulled back.
“I saw the footage.”
Khloe nodded.
Diane’s eyes filled with tears.
“I also know Isabella.”
Khloe frowned.
“What do you mean?”
Diane looked toward Marcus.
“Her mother called me six months ago.”
Everyone became still.
Khloe stared at her.
“Why?”
May you like
Diane answered.
“To warn me that Isabella was becoming obsessed with your husband.”
