Chapter 18 - The Fall of Julian Mercer

Nolan Price did not cooperate immediately.
He sat through nine hours of questioning without requesting food.
Without asking about bail.
Without showing fear.
Then federal agents showed him the burner phone.
The payments.
The hospital access records.
The rented vehicle.
And the medication found in his bag.
His silence changed.
He asked for an attorney.
By midnight, he asked for a deal.
Nolan admitted Halcyon Capital had funded a private operation targeting Marcus.
He insisted Julian Mercer never personally ordered murder.
Detective Mills asked the obvious question.
“Then who did?”
Nolan looked at the recorder.
“No one used that word.”
“What words did they use?”
“Remove the disruption.”
“What disruption?”
“Khloe.”
Marcus listened from another room.
His hands tightened.
Nolan continued.
“Mercer said the board situation required pressure.”
“Did he authorize the hospital operation?”
“Yes.”
“Did he know Khloe could die?”
Nolan hesitated.
Then nodded.
“He asked what would happen if she suffered another medical crisis.”
“What did you tell him?”
“That at thirty-two weeks, complications could be severe.”
“And his response?”
Nolan looked down.
“He said severe was useful.”
That was enough.
Federal agents arrested Julian Mercer at six-twenty the following morning.
News helicopters filmed the entrance to his Connecticut estate.
Mercer appeared in a navy suit.
Calm.
Expressionless.
His attorney walked beside him.
He released one statement.
“These allegations are the desperate inventions of criminals seeking reduced sentences.”
Then investigators searched Halcyon Capital.
They seized computers.
Phones.
Financial records.
An encrypted server contained a folder named THORNE CONTINGENCY.
Inside was the complete Phase Five document.
PHASE FIVE: MEDICAL DISRUPTION.
OBJECTIVE: DELAY OR INCAPACITATE MARCUS THROUGH FAMILY CRISIS.
ACCEPTABLE OUTCOME: LONG-TERM MATERNAL HOSPITALIZATION.
SECONDARY OUTCOME: PREMATURE DELIVERY AND REPUTATIONAL INSTABILITY.
FINAL OPTION: PERMANENT REMOVAL OF SPOUSAL INFLUENCE.
Khloe read those words from her hospital bed.
Amelia remained in the NICU two floors below.
Marcus sat beside her.
Khloe placed the pages down.
“Permanent removal.”
Marcus could not speak.
She looked at him.
“They were willing to kill me.”
“Yes.”
“And Isabella knew?”
“Not all of it.”
Marcus answered.
“According to Nolan, Isabella believed they wanted you gone from the marriage.”
Khloe’s expression hardened.
“She still attacked me.”
“Yes.”
“She still endangered Amelia.”
“Yes.”
“I don’t care that Mercer manipulated her.”
“Neither do I.”
Khloe looked out the window.
For months, Isabella had seemed like the center of the nightmare.
Now she appeared smaller.
Still guilty.
Still dangerous.
But smaller.
Julian Mercer had found her obsession.
Fed it.
Weaponized it.
Then prepared to discard her when she failed.
Khloe turned back to Marcus.
“What happens now?”
“He goes to court.”
“Isabella too.”
“Yes.”
“And us?”
Marcus paused.
Khloe watched him carefully.
“That part doesn’t get solved by prosecutors.”
“I know.”
He reached for her hand.
This time she allowed him to take it.
“We start again.”
Khloe did not smile.
But she did not pull away.
Downstairs, Amelia’s oxygen levels improved for the third day in a row.
For the first time since the gala, the Thornes were moving toward something other than survival.
They were moving toward recovery.

But one secret remained.
A secret Isabella had not yet revealed.
