Chapter 19 - The Trial of Lies

Three months passed.

Amelia came home weighing just over six pounds.

Khloe carried her through the front door herself.

Marcus walked beside them.

The nursery had been completely redesigned.

Not because Isabella had entered it.

But because Khloe refused to let that memory own the room.

The stolen bracelet was recovered from Isabella’s townhouse.

Khloe never wore it again.

She placed it inside a box for Amelia.

Someday, she would tell her daughter it belonged to women who survived difficult things.

The criminal cases moved quickly.

Nolan pleaded guilty to conspiracy, attempted assault, illegal access to medical systems, and witness intimidation.

Grant Ellis pleaded guilty.

Caleb Dunn took a deal.

Owen Pike entered witness protection after testifying before a grand jury.

Julian Mercer refused every plea offer.

Isabella surprised everyone.

She pleaded guilty to aggravated assault.

But she refused to admit conspiracy.

Her sentencing hearing drew enormous attention.

Khloe attended.

Not because she wanted revenge.

Because she wanted Isabella to see the woman she had failed to destroy.

Khloe entered the courtroom wearing a simple cream suit.

Marcus walked beside her.

Samuel and Diane sat behind them.

Isabella was brought in through a side door.

For the first time since the hospital, the two women looked directly at each other.

Isabella looked older.

Not physically.

Emotionally.

The judge invited Khloe to speak.

Khloe stood.

She carried no dramatic speech.

No photographs.

No prepared pages.

She looked at Isabella.

“You wanted me to disappear.”

The courtroom became silent.

“You believed my marriage made me your enemy.”

“You believed my pregnancy made my child part of that competition.”

“You told yourself you were fighting for love.”

Khloe paused.

“But love does not require destroying another woman.”

Isabella lowered her eyes.

“You made choices.”

Khloe continued.

“Julian Mercer manipulated you.”

“That does not erase your choices.”

“You walked into that room.”

“You threatened me.”

“You shoved me.”

“You hurt me while I protected my daughter.”

“And then you lied.”

Isabella’s eyes filled with tears.

Khloe did not raise her voice.

“My daughter entered this world early because of what you did.”

“She spent weeks learning to breathe without help.”

“She will never know you.”

“But I will always know the sound of that monitor changing after you attacked me.”

Marcus stared forward.

His eyes shone.

Khloe finished.

“I am not asking the court to hate you.”

“I am asking the court to remember that obsession is not an excuse.”

She sat.

Isabella received a sentence of eleven years.

Before officers led her away, she turned.

“Khloe.”

Marcus stiffened.

Khloe looked at her.

Isabella’s voice was quiet.

“There is something you still don’t know.”

Her attorney immediately grabbed her arm.

“Isabella.”

She ignored him.

“The investigator wasn’t first.”

Khloe frowned.

“What?”

Isabella smiled sadly.

“Owen Pike wasn’t the first person watching your family.”

Marcus stood.

The officers moved closer.

Isabella continued.

“Someone was watching you before Julian ever contacted me.”

The courtroom erupted.

Her attorney demanded the hearing end.

The judge ordered Isabella removed.

Khloe watched her disappear through the side door.

Marcus turned toward Detective Mills.

“What was she talking about?”

Mills looked genuinely confused.

“I don’t know.”

Khloe felt an old, familiar coldness return.

That evening, David reopened the earliest surveillance records.

He searched six months back.

Then a year.

Then eighteen months.

At 2:14 in the morning, he called Marcus.

“I found something.”

Marcus sat up beside Khloe.

“What?”

“A photograph.”

“Of what?”

“You and Khloe.”

“When?”

David’s answer made Marcus’s stomach tighten.

“Three months before Isabella ever met Julian Mercer.”

Khloe was awake now.

Marcus put the phone on speaker.

“Who took it?”

“We don’t know.”

David continued.

“But there’s a symbol embedded in the file metadata.”

May you like

“What symbol?”

“A black crown.”
