Chapter 2 - The Company He Never Owned

Nathan spent the next ten seconds pretending he had not heard my father.
Then he laughed.
It was loud.
Forced.
Almost desperate.
“You cannot remove me.”
He pointed at himself.
“I founded Ashford Global.”
My father took off his coat and handed it to one of his security men.
“You founded a company with four leased trucks and forty-eight thousand dollars in debt.”
Nathan’s jaw tightened.
“I built it into an international logistics empire.”
“You built it using capital provided by lenders whose controlling debt positions ultimately trace back to me.”
“That doesn’t mean you own it.”
“No.”
Dad looked toward one of the men who had entered behind him.
“This does.”
The man stepped forward.
I recognized him from business magazines.
Gerald Knox.
Chairman of Ashford Global’s board.
Nathan’s expression collapsed.
“Gerald?”
Gerald did not offer his hand.
“At 9:17 tonight, the board received preliminary evidence indicating material fraud, undisclosed related-party transactions, possible financial misrepresentation, and severe executive misconduct.”
Nathan stared at him.
“You called a board meeting without me?”
“You are the subject of the meeting.”
Celeste moved toward the staircase.
Evelyn noticed.
“Ms. Monroe.”
Celeste stopped.
“You should remain available.”
Celeste folded her arms.
“Am I under arrest?”
“No.”
“Then I’m leaving.”
My father looked toward the security chief.
“Do not obstruct her.”
Celeste smiled triumphantly.
Then Dad continued.
“But make sure every camera records exactly what she carries out of this house.”
Her smile vanished.
Nathan looked between all of us.
“This is intimidation.”
Evelyn answered.
“This is preservation of evidence.”
Nathan pointed at me.
“She stole company records.”
I almost laughed.
“I copied records you stored on a laptop you used inside our marital home.”
“You broke into my accounts.”
“You gave me the passwords.”
“That doesn’t mean—”
“You used our anniversary as one of them.”
Gerald looked away as though embarrassed for him.
Nathan’s fists clenched.
My father moved one step forward.
Every security officer in the room became alert.
Dad stopped several feet from Nathan.
“You will not raise your hand while my daughter is in this room.”
Nathan lowered his fists.
He hated that he obeyed.
I could see it.
Dr. Ellis touched my shoulder gently.
“Claire, we need to leave.”
“I’m not finished.”
My father looked at me.
I knew that look.
He wanted to carry me out himself.
He also knew I had stayed silent for too long.
So he let me speak.
I walked toward the entry table.
Every step sent fire through my back.
I picked up Evelyn’s forensic report.
Nathan watched me.
“You want to know when your empire actually began collapsing?”
He said nothing.
“It wasn’t when I called my father.”
I opened the folder.
“It was the night you pushed me down the stairs.”
Nathan’s expression flickered.
Celeste looked at him.
I continued.
“Three days in the hospital gave me time to think.”
“I stopped asking whether you loved me.”
“I started asking what you were hiding.”
I turned several pages.
“First, I found the payments to Celeste.”
Nathan looked at her.
“Then the supplier contracts.”
“Then the false invoices.”
“Then something much worse.”
Celeste suddenly interrupted.
“Claire doesn’t understand corporate structures.”
I looked at her.
“I understand signatures.”
I pulled out one page.
Nathan stared at it.
It was a loan authorization worth fourteen million dollars.
At the bottom appeared my name.
CLAIRE ASHFORD.
My signature sat beneath it.
Nathan looked away.
I felt something inside me go cold.
“You forged my signature.”
He spoke quickly.
“It was administrative.”
“You pledged marital assets.”
“The assets were protected.”
“You pledged property you did not own.”
Nathan glanced at my father.
Dad’s expression had become unreadable.
I turned another page.
“And you used my trust’s name as supporting collateral.”
Nathan’s face drained.
That was the first time I realized he had known something.
Not everything.
But something.
My father saw it too.
“Interesting.”
Nathan looked at him.
Dad stepped closer.
“You knew Claire had access to money.”
Nathan said nothing.
“You did not know how much.”
Silence.
My father nodded slowly.
“That explains the forged guarantee.”
Celeste reached for Nathan’s arm.
He pulled away.
I saw it happen.
The first fracture between them.
Nathan looked at her.
“Did you tell me that trust was dormant?”
Celeste’s face hardened.
“Nathan.”
“You told me there was no active beneficiary.”
“This is not the time.”
He stared at her.
“You said no one would ever notice.”
I stopped breathing.
Evelyn’s eyes sharpened.
My father looked at Celeste.
“What exactly did you tell him?”
Celeste realized her mistake.
She grabbed her handbag.
“I’m done with this circus.”
She headed toward the door.
No one stopped her.
But when she reached it, flashing red and blue lights appeared beyond the front gates.
Celeste froze.
Nathan whispered.
“Police?”
Evelyn checked her phone.
“Not exactly.”
Two government vehicles rolled up the driveway behind the security SUVs.
Dad looked at Nathan.
“Your fraud problem just became much larger.”
The front door opened again.
Two investigators entered.
One held up an identification card.
The other carried a sealed evidence case.
“We’re here regarding a financial-crimes referral submitted by Ashford Global’s independent audit committee.”
Nathan turned slowly toward Gerald.
“You reported me?”
Gerald’s reply was immediate.
“The board reported the evidence.”
Nathan looked at Celeste.
She looked at him.

And in that single moment, they both understood the same thing.
The first one who talked might be the one who survived.
