Chapter 12 - My Mother’s Last Secret

The pendant opened with pressure on a seam I had never noticed.
Inside the gold casing sat something smaller than my thumbnail.
Not a modern drive.
A micro-storage wafer.
My father stared at it.
“Laura used prototype secure storage.”
“Can we read it?”
Evelyn nodded.
“If the encryption key still exists.”
Sloan laughed from the floor.
“It exists.”
Dad looked at him.
“Where?”
He nodded toward me.
“She knows it.”
“I don’t.”
“Yes, you do.”
I wanted to hit him.
Instead, I forced myself to think.
My mother loved puzzles.
Birthdays.
Poems.
Music.
Every summer when I was a child, she created treasure hunts around the house.
Dad looked at me.
“What phrase did she repeat to you?”
“Hundreds.”
“Something about safekeeping.”
My chest tightened.
I remembered bedtime.
Mom sitting on the edge of my bed.
Her hand closing mine around the pendant before it was ever mine.
“When the truth gets lost, follow what doesn’t change.”
I whispered the sentence.
Evelyn entered it.
Wrong key.
I closed my eyes.
What doesn’t change?
Mom loved astronomy.
She used to point at Polaris.
The North Star.
“Follow what doesn’t change.”
I said.
“Polaris.”
Evelyn tried it.
The screen changed.
ACCESS GRANTED.
My father sat down.
Files began appearing.
Names.
Transfers.
Audio recordings.
Photographs.
Contracts.
Thirty years of hidden transactions.
Dad whispered.
“My God.”
The first document was written by my mother.
IF YOU ARE READING THIS, I FAILED TO EXPOSE BLACKTHORN SAFELY.
My hands shook.
I continued.
BLACKTHORN IS A NETWORK BUILT TO GAIN CONTROL THROUGH DEBT, COMPROMISE, AND SUCCESSION.
THE CURRENT CUSTODIAN IS NOT THE FOUNDER.
THE SYSTEM REPLACES ITS LEADERS.
TRUST NO SINGLE CONFESSION AS THE WHOLE TRUTH.
I looked at Sloan.
He smiled.
“Smart woman.”
I read on.
THE NETWORK HAS INFILTRATED BENNETT SOVEREIGN.
I BELIEVE ONE OF CHARLES’S RELATIVES IS COMPROMISED.
My father closed his eyes.
Then came the name.
RICHARD BENNETT HAS HIDDEN INFORMATION FROM ME.
Dad stood.
“I knew it.”
I kept reading.
BUT I DO NOT BELIEVE RICHARD IS BLACKTHORN.
Dad stopped.
The next sentence changed everything again.
I BELIEVE RICHARD IS TRYING TO INFILTRATE THEM.
My father stared at the screen.
“He never told me.”
Sloan laughed.
“Because you would have ruined it.”
I looked at him.
“You knew?”
“I knew Richard was playing both sides.”
“Where is he?”
Sloan smiled.
“Ask Celeste.”
Everyone turned.
Celeste tightened her grip on the metal case.
Nathan stared at her.
“You know?”
She looked at me.
“Richard raised me.”
Silence.
Nathan whispered.
“What?”
“After my mother disappeared, Adrian was never around.”
“Richard made sure I had schools.”
“Money.”
“Protection.”
I stared.
“You called him?”
“Yes.”
“When?”
“Tonight.”
My father looked furious.
“You told him about the ledger.”
“No.”
“I told him Claire finally activated the recorder.”
I looked at her.
“You knew my pendant was recording?”
“I installed the software update.”
My stomach turned.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
The charity gala.
The night Nathan shoved me down the stairs.
Celeste had helped fasten my necklace before we left.
I remembered her fingers touching the clasp.
“You were helping me?”
Her expression broke.
“Not at first.”
Nathan stared.
“Then what were you doing?”
Celeste looked at him.
“What Adrian ordered me to do.”
Nathan went pale.
She continued.
“I was supposed to turn you against Claire.”
“Make you unstable.”
“Make your company vulnerable.”
“Then help transfer control.”
My mouth went dry.
“Why?”
“Because Ashford Global had become one of Blackthorn’s largest laundering channels.”
Nathan stepped toward her.
“You used me.”
Celeste laughed once.
“You beat your wife because I whispered in your ear.”
“Do not make yourself a victim.”
Nathan stopped.
She looked at me.
“I expected you to leave.”
“But you stayed.”
“Then I realized why.”
“The evidence.”
I nodded.
“You knew.”
“I suspected.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
“Because I did not know whether you were working with your father.”
I almost laughed.
“Nobody trusts anyone in this family.”
“No.”
Celeste’s eyes filled with something close to regret.
“That is how Blackthorn survives.”
Evelyn interrupted.
“There’s an index file.”
She opened it.
A list of coded identities filled the screen.
One entry was marked CURRENT CUSTODIAN.
The name was encrypted separately.
Dad leaned closer.
“Can you open it?”
Evelyn tried.
A message appeared.
SECOND AUTHORIZATION REQUIRED.
I looked at Sloan.
“Whose?”
He smiled.
“Laura designed the archive so one person could not expose everyone alone.”
“Who has the second key?”
Sloan looked toward the elevator.
Footsteps approached.
Security officers raised their weapons.
A man appeared at the end of the corridor.
Silver hair.
Dark coat.
My uncle.
Richard Bennett stopped beneath the light.
May you like
Then he raised a small metal key between two fingers.
“I do.”
