Chapter 18 - The Sister I Never Knew

For several seconds, nobody spoke.
The woman looked at me.
Then at my father.
Dad had stopped breathing.
“Emma?”
The name came out like a prayer.
The young woman’s eyes filled with tears.
“Hello, Dad.”
I stared at him.
My father looked as if he had seen a ghost.
I could barely speak.
“Who is she?”
Dad looked at me.
Then at her.
“My daughter.”
The room tilted.
“My what?”
Adrian smiled.
“Laura had secrets too.”
Dad ignored him.
He stepped toward the woman.
“Emma died.”
She shook her head.
“No.”
Dad’s voice broke.
“I saw the hospital records.”
“They were changed.”
He turned toward Adrian with murder in his eyes.
Adrian raised both hands.
“I did not take her.”
Emma spoke.
“Mom hid me.”
I stared.
“Mom?”
Emma looked at me.
“I was born two years before you.”
My knees felt weak.
Dad gripped the table.
“Laura told me the baby died two hours after birth.”
Emma nodded.
“She believed Blackthorn had already penetrated the family.”
“She thought someone would use me as leverage.”
“Why you?”
Emma looked at Adrian.
“Because Mom had placed an emergency trust in my name.”
Dad whispered.
“No.”
Adrian smiled.
“Yes.”
I looked at my father.
“You didn’t know?”
“No.”
Emma continued.
“Mom gave me to Margaret Monroe.”
Celeste’s mother.
Everything connected again.
“Margaret raised you?”
“For seven years.”
“Then Richard moved me overseas.”
I stared.
“Richard knew?”
“Yes.”
Anger surged through me.
Of course he knew.
Another secret.
Another decision made on my behalf.
Dad looked shattered.
“Why didn’t Richard tell me?”
Emma’s reply was quiet.
“Mom made him promise.”
Dad laughed once.
A broken sound.
“She trusted my brother more than me.”
Emma shook her head.
“She was trying to protect you too.”
Dad closed his eyes.
Adrian interrupted.
“Touching.”
I turned on him.
“What does she have to do with Blackthorn?”
He looked between us.
“Laura split the succession authority.”
“Claire controls the visible Bennett trusts.”
“Emma controls the hidden emergency architecture.”
I stared at my sister.
She looked terrified.
Adrian continued.
“Together, they can terminate the original system.”
Dad looked at him.
“Then why haven’t you done it?”
Emma answered.
“Because terminating it releases every escrow file.”
“What is in them?”
“Evidence.”
“Against whom?”
She looked at Dad.
“Everyone.”
My father frowned.
“Meaning?”
Adrian smiled.
“Politicians.”
“Banks.”
“Private security companies.”
“Bennett executives.”
“Ashford executives.”
“Blackthorn operators.”
“Some guilty.”
“Some merely compromised.”
“Some protected witnesses.”
I understood.
“If we release everything blindly, innocent people get exposed too.”
Emma nodded.
“And if we do nothing?”
“Blackthorn remains technically alive.”
Adrian spread his hands.
“That is the dilemma Laura left you.”
I looked at him.
“You want immunity.”
“I want controlled dismantlement.”
“You want to choose what gets buried.”
“Yes.”
“No.”
He sighed.
“Claire.”
“No.”
I looked at Emma.
“Can we separate the files?”
“Not from here.”
“Where?”
“Bennett Sovereign has a clean-room archive.”
Dad nodded.
“We can isolate and review them under court supervision.”
Adrian’s expression changed.
That was not what he wanted.
I smiled.
“You didn’t think of that?”
“I thought Charles would never allow outsiders into the family archive.”
I looked at Dad.
He stared at me.
Then at Emma.
For most of my life, my father had protected the family through secrecy.
That secrecy had nearly destroyed both daughters.
He understood it now.
Dad took out his phone.
“Evelyn.”
He waited.
“Prepare full disclosure protocol.”
Adrian’s smile disappeared.
Dad continued.
“Invite federal financial-crimes representatives and independent counsel.”
“Everything relevant goes under seal first.”
“Nothing destroyed.”
He ended the call.
Adrian stared at him.
“You will destroy Bennett Sovereign.”
Dad looked at me.
Then Emma.
“No.”
“I’m finally going to save what is left of my family.”
Adrian reached inside his jacket.
My father moved.
I heard a sharp crack.
A weapon fell to the floor.
Richard appeared in the doorway behind him.
He had struck Adrian’s arm with a wooden chair leg.
Federal agents rushed inside seconds later.
Adrian was forced to the floor.
He looked up at me.
“You think this ends with me?”
I stared down at him.
“No.”
“I think it begins with you talking.”
He smiled even while they cuffed him.
“Then you better ask Nathan about account seventeen.”
My blood turned cold.
May you like
Even now, he had one more secret.
And judging from his smile, he knew exactly what it would do.
