Chapter 1 - The Men at the Door

The front doors of Blackthorn Manor swung inward so hard that one of the brass handles struck the wall.

Nathan jumped backward.

Celeste did not move.

For the first time since I had known her, she looked genuinely afraid.

Six men in dark suits entered first.

They did not look at Nathan.

They looked at me.

Behind them came a gray-haired man carrying a medical bag, two women with tablets, and a tall attorney I recognized immediately.

Evelyn Shaw had represented my father for nearly twenty years.

Nathan stared at her.

Then he stared at me.

“What is this?”

Evelyn ignored him.

She crossed the marble foyer and stopped in front of me.

“Claire.”

Her voice changed when she saw my condition.

“Can you walk?”

“I can.”

It was a lie.

She knew it.

Still, she nodded.

“Then walk toward me.”

Nathan stepped between us.

“This is my house.”

One of the security men moved before Nathan finished the sentence.

He did not touch him.

He simply stepped into Nathan’s path.

Nathan stopped.

Evelyn finally looked at my husband.

“No.”

Nathan frowned.

“No what?”

“This is not your house.”

Silence filled the foyer.

Celeste’s eyes moved toward me.

Nathan laughed once.

It was the wrong kind of laugh.

The frightened kind.

“I own Blackthorn Manor.”

Evelyn opened the folder in her hand.

“Blackthorn Manor is owned by Blackthorn Property Holdings LLC.”

“I know that.”

“Blackthorn Property Holdings is controlled by Bennett Sovereign Trust.”

Nathan’s face changed.

He looked at me slowly.

Evelyn continued.

“Mrs. Ashford is the sole beneficial heir of that trust.”

Celeste whispered something under her breath.

Nathan shook his head.

“That’s impossible.”

I took another painful step.

“You never read anything that didn’t have your name printed at the top.”

Nathan turned toward me.

“You told me your father was an accountant.”

“I told you he understood money.”

“You said he retired.”

“He did.”

Evelyn’s mouth almost curved.

“From public life.”

Nathan’s phone rang again.

He answered immediately.

“What?”

I watched every trace of arrogance drain from his face.

“No, you cannot call the loan.”

His eyes darted toward Evelyn.

“What default?”

He listened.

Then he shouted.

“That guarantee has never been enforced.”

Evelyn closed her folder.

“It has now.”

Nathan dropped the call.

“You planned this.”

I looked down at the whip lying near his shoe.

“No.”

“I prepared for it.”

The doctor reached me.

“My name is Dr. Ellis.”

“I work for your father.”

“I need to examine you immediately.”

Nathan barked out a laugh.

“Of course.”

“Private doctor.”

“Private army.”

“Secret billionaire father.”

He looked around wildly.

“What else did you hide from me?”

I looked him straight in the eyes.

“The fact that I knew about Celeste for eleven months.”

Celeste’s face went still.

Nathan turned toward her.

I continued.

“The fact that I knew about the offshore accounts for six months.”

Nathan stopped breathing.

“And the fact that I copied every transaction before you could erase it.”

Celeste suddenly reached for her handbag.

One of the security men stepped forward.

“Leave the bag where it is.”

She froze.

Nathan looked at me with pure disbelief.

“You were spying on me.”

“You threw me down a staircase.”

“You threatened me.”

“You stole from companies my family financed.”

“You used my name on documents I never signed.”

“And tonight, you gave me everything I needed.”

The color disappeared from his face.

“What documents?”

That was when Evelyn removed a second folder.

She placed it on the entry table.

On the front was Nathan’s company logo.

ASHFORD GLOBAL LOGISTICS.

Beneath it were three words.

FORENSIC AUDIT REPORT.

Nathan stared at the folder.

Evelyn spoke quietly.

“Seventy-three million dollars.”

Celeste took a step backward.

Nathan did not look at her.

“What seventy-three million?”

Evelyn looked directly at Celeste.

“The seventy-three million dollars transferred through Monroe Strategic Consulting, seven shell suppliers, and three foreign intermediaries over twenty-eight months.”

Nathan turned toward his mistress.

“Tell me she’s lying.”

Celeste said nothing.

“Celeste.”

Still nothing.

Nathan grabbed her arm.

“Tell me.”

She ripped herself free.

“Don’t touch me.”

Something passed between them.

Something I had never seen before.

Fear.

Not of me.

Of each other.

My phone vibrated.

A message from my father appeared.

I’M THREE MINUTES AWAY.

I stared at the words.

Nathan noticed.

“Your father is coming here?”

“Yes.”

He swallowed.

“Who is he?”

Before I could answer, the sound of another vehicle rolled across the driveway.

Not a helicopter.

Not an SUV.

A long black sedan.

It stopped beneath the front portico.

Everyone in the room turned.

The rear door opened.

My father stepped out.

Nathan had met him once before.

At our wedding.

Back then, Dad had worn an inexpensive gray suit and introduced himself simply as Charles Bennett.

Nathan barely spoke to him for five minutes.

Tonight, Charles Bennett entered Blackthorn Manor with three board chairmen following behind him.

Nathan recognized every one of them.

His knees nearly gave out.

“Mr. Bennett?”

My father looked at the marks on my arms.

Then he looked at the man I had married.

His expression became completely still.

“Nathan.”

Nathan opened his mouth.

Dad raised one hand.

“Do not explain.”

His voice was quiet.

That somehow made it worse.

“I spent six years wondering what kind of man you would become if you believed my daughter had nobody standing behind her.”

He looked at the broken champagne glass.

Then at the whip.

“Now I know.”

Nathan whispered.

“Charles, we can fix this.”

Dad looked at me.

“Claire.”

“Yes?”

“Do you want me to stop?”

I knew exactly what he meant.

The loans.

The board.

The investigation.

The collapse.

I looked at Nathan.

Then at Celeste.

For six years, I had made excuses.

For six months, I had collected proof.

For two hundred strikes, I had stopped feeling like his wife.

Now I felt like myself again.

“No.”

Dad nodded once.

Then he looked at Evelyn.

“Continue.”

Evelyn lifted her phone.

“Phase two.”

Nathan’s own phone rang again.

This time, he did not answer.

A notification appeared across the screen.

EMERGENCY BOARD VOTE SCHEDULED.

Another followed.

CEO ACCESS SUSPENDED.

Then another.

EXECUTIVE CREDENTIALS REVOKED.

Nathan stared at his phone.

“What did you do?”

My father answered.

“We removed you from the company you thought belonged to you.”

Nathan looked up.

May you like

Dad’s next words destroyed the last illusion he still had.

“And that is only the beginning.”
