Chapter 9 - THE COMPANY INSIDE MY MARRIAGE

Brooke was taken to a hospital.

She had no serious physical injuries.

Marcus had left minutes before police arrived.

He had known they were coming.

That meant someone had warned him.

I drove to Colorado Springs with Daniel and Mara.

When Brooke saw me, she started crying.

“I should have helped you.”

I sat beside her.

“You can help now.”

She shook her head.

“You don't understand.”

“Then make me understand.”

Brooke described Grant's office.

A locked drawer.

Six folders.

Mine was thickest.

Inside were photographs, financial projections, and notes about my career.

One page listed my company stock value at different market prices.

Another estimated the value of my penthouse.

Another discussed “marital leverage.”

I felt sick.

“Was Ryan's name in the file?”

Brooke nodded.

“Everywhere.”

“What did it say?”

She hesitated.

“Asset Liaison.”

I laughed once.

There was no humor in it.

My husband had apparently been given a job description for marrying me.

Brooke grabbed my hand.

“Claire, I don't think Ryan understood all of it at first.”

“Don't defend him.”

“I'm not.”

Her voice broke.

“He knew enough.”

That mattered more.

She told me Ryan had received payments from Alpine Meridian before our engagement.

Twenty-five thousand dollars.

Then another fifty thousand after our wedding.

Then monthly transfers.

Simon confirmed them within an hour.

Ryan had maintained a hidden account.

The balance had once exceeded nine hundred thousand dollars.

Most of it was now gone.

“Where did it go?”

I asked.

Simon looked grim.

“Back through companies connected to Grant.”

It was a circle.

They paid Ryan to gain access to me.

Then used my financial identity to create more money.

Then moved that money elsewhere.

Brooke suddenly remembered something.

“The note about Evelyn.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Marcus kept saying Evelyn owned Ryan.”

“What does that mean?”

“I don't know.”

“He said it like Ryan was something she bought.”

Mara opened corporate filings.

Evelyn personally owned twelve percent of Alpine Meridian.

Marcus owned twenty percent.

Grant owned another eighteen.

The rest belonged to shell entities.

Then Simon found the document that changed everything.

Alpine Meridian had invested in a private technology fund.

That fund owned a meaningful block of shares in my employer.

My marriage and my company were connected financially.

I stared at the screen.

“How much influence does that give them?”

Simon looked at me.

“Potentially enough to affect a board vote.”

I felt the blood leave my face.

“What board vote?”

My company had a major event coming.

Our CEO, Thomas Keller, planned to retire.

The board would select his successor within two months.

I was one of three internal candidates.

Evelyn was another.

Suddenly every promotion conversation made sense.

Every time Evelyn had pushed me toward higher visibility.

Every time she had encouraged me to acquire more stock.

Every time Ryan told me to stay focused on work while he “handled the home.”

They weren't merely stealing from me.

They had been building me into something worth controlling.

My phone buzzed.
