Chapter 19 - THE LIST

The vault still existed.
Access had transferred through several bank mergers.
My father's deposit agreement remained active because my mother had continued paying the annual fee.
She had never opened it.
She said she was afraid Victor would know.
Now federal agents supervised.
Inside the box were microfilm copies.
Paper ledgers.
A cassette tape.
And a sealed letter addressed to me.
CLAIRE.
My hands shook.
The letter was dated seventeen years earlier.
If you're reading this, then something I hoped would remain buried has found its way back to you.
My eyes blurred.
I continued.
Dad explained that Victor Hale's network began as corporate intelligence.
He placed people near wealthy executives.
Secretaries.
Advisers.
Romantic partners.
Friends.
Drivers.
Consultants.
Sometimes those people knowingly gathered information.
Sometimes they were manipulated themselves.
Over time, information became leverage.
Leverage became ownership.
Ownership became power.
The list contained thousands of names.
Targets.
Sources.
Payments.
Compromised officials.
Corporate insiders.
Dad had copied part of it.
Enough to prove the system existed.
But one sentence terrified me most.
If Victor ever learns that you have this, trust no one who arrives offering protection.
The federal investigators were standing outside.
Daniel was outside.
Mara was outside.
Thomas had offered help.
Ryan had offered warnings.
Everyone was suddenly questionable.
I folded the letter.
My mother looked at me.
“What did he say?”
I handed it to her.
She began to cry.
Federal agents cataloged the contents.
The cassette was digitized.
My father's voice filled the room.
He sounded younger than I remembered.
Calm.
Careful.
“Victor doesn't build loyalty.”
“He builds dependency.”
“He places one compromised person beside another until nobody can move without exposing someone else.”
Then another voice appeared.
Charles Price.
Evelyn's father.
They had secretly met.
Charles sounded terrified.
“Victor keeps backups.”
“Where?”
My father asked.
“I don't know.”
“You worked for him twenty years.”
“He never trusted anyone with everything.”
“What about the Crown files?”
My pulse jumped.
Charles replied.
“Crown isn't a project.”
“Then what is it?”
“A succession system.”
Silence.
My father asked, “Succession to what?”
Charles answered.
“To Victor.”
The recording ended.
We had misunderstood Crown.
It wasn't merely about my company.
It was about choosing whoever would inherit Victor's network.
Evelyn thought she was the successor.
Marcus may have believed he was.
Perhaps Thomas did too.
Then one of the investigators entered the room.
“Claire, you need to see this.”
He carried a newly recovered page from Marcus's storage.
At the top was PROJECT CROWN - FINAL CANDIDATES.
Three names were typed beneath it.
EVELYN PRICE.
THOMAS KELLER.
CLAIRE BENNETT.
My blood went cold.
I looked at Daniel.
“I was never just a target.”
He nodded slowly.
“No.”
Victor had been testing me.
The marriage.
The manipulation.
The financial pressure.
The career.
Maybe even my reaction to betrayal.
May you like
He had not only wanted to control me.
He had been evaluating whether I could replace him.
