Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN THEY CALLED UNSTABLE

By nine that night, three websites had repeated the story.

By midnight, social media had turned my life into entertainment.

Some people defended me.

Others asked why I had “destroyed a family dinner.”

A blurry video appeared.

It showed me pulling the table runner.

It did not show Grant burning me first.

It did not show Ryan holding my wrists.

Brooke stared at her phone.

“They used my recording.”

I looked at her.

“Did you send it to anyone?”

“No.”

“Did Ryan?”

She shook her head.

Then her face changed.

“My phone backed up automatically.”

“To what?”

“A family cloud account.”

Ryan had access.

So had Grant.

Maybe Evelyn.

The edited video had been prepared exactly as they intended.

A pregnant woman throwing dinnerware.

A frightened family.

A headline about instability.

Mara wanted me to stay silent publicly.

Daniel agreed.

“Evidence wins this.”

I hated that they were right.

The next morning, I entered my company's boardroom wearing a navy maternity dress and a small bandage beneath it.

Evelyn sat near the end of the table.

She looked immaculate.

Gray suit.

Pearl earrings.

Calm eyes.

She smiled when I entered.

I almost admired the nerve.

Thomas opened the meeting.

The anonymous allegations were summarized.

Then Evelyn spoke.

“I care deeply about Claire.”

I wanted to laugh.

“She has been under extraordinary personal stress.”

Her voice softened.

“For her health and the health of her child, temporary leave may be appropriate.”

I looked at every board member.

Then at her.

“May I respond?”

Thomas nodded.

I placed a folder on the table.

“I agree that this situation is serious.”

Evelyn's expression barely moved.

“But not for the reason Ms. Price suggests.”

I distributed copies of payment records.

Evelyn's eyes changed.

Only slightly.

Enough.

“These records show payments from entities partially owned by Ms. Price to my husband and father-in-law before and during my marriage.”

Silence.

“Several of those same entities obtained financial benefit through forged instruments connected to my personal assets.”

A board member leaned forward.

“Are you accusing our CFO of fraud?”

“No.”

I looked at Evelyn.

“I am providing evidence to investigators who can decide what the appropriate accusation is.”

Evelyn smiled faintly.

“Claire is confused.”

I pressed a button.

The screen behind me displayed a corporate ownership chart.

Alpine Meridian.

Evelyn Price.

Marcus Price.

Grant Whitmore.

The room changed.

Thomas turned toward her.

“Evelyn?”

She remained calm.

“I have minority interests in many investments.”

I changed the screen.

A payment ledger appeared.

RYAN WHITMORE.

ASSET LIAISON.

The color finally left her face.

I leaned back.

“Still confused?”

Nobody spoke.

Then the boardroom door opened.

Two federal investigators entered with company counsel.

Evelyn looked at them.

Then at me.

For the first time since I'd known her, she looked afraid.

But as she stood, she whispered something only I heard.

“You think Ryan was the first person we put near you?”

I froze.

May you like

She smiled.

“He wasn't.”
