Chapter 2 - THE OWNER OF THE PENTHOUSE

The younger police officer looked first at my stomach.

Then at the burned fabric.

His expression immediately changed.

“Ma'am, are you injured?”

“Yes.”

Ryan stepped forward.

“This is a misunderstanding.”

The officer raised one hand.

“Sir, stay where you are.”

Ryan stopped.

Grant did not.

He marched toward the entrance with wine staining his shirt and anger making his face red.

“This is my son's family matter.”

The second officer looked at him.

“Were you the person holding the cigarette?”

Silence.

I lifted my phone.

“I recorded part of what happened.”

Grant looked at Ryan.

Ryan looked at Brooke.

Brooke suddenly became fascinated with the floor.

The property manager, Mr. Ellis, moved beside me.

“Ms. Bennett, do you want these guests removed?”

Grant barked out a laugh.

“Guests?”

Mr. Ellis didn't react.

“The condominium is registered solely to Ms. Bennett.”

Diane slowly turned toward Ryan.

“You said the two of you bought it together.”

Ryan looked furious.

Not embarrassed.

Furious.

That detail mattered.

He wasn't ashamed that he had lied.

He was angry the lie had been exposed.

The officer asked me to describe what happened.

I did.

I kept my voice steady.

Grant interrupted three times.

Each interruption made him sound worse.

Ryan tried twice to explain that I had been “emotional all evening.”

Then I played the recording.

Grant's voice filled the room.

“This is what happens when a wife forgets who runs this family.”

Then came my scream.

Then Ryan's voice.

“Stop fighting, Claire.”

Nobody moved while it played.

When the recording ended, Diane sat down.

The officer looked at Grant.

“Turn around.”

Grant blinked.

“What?”

“Turn around and place your hands behind your back.”

Ryan exploded.

“You can't arrest him over that.”

The officer looked at him.

“We're not debating this with you.”

Grant started shouting.

Diane started crying.

Brooke finally lowered her phone.

Ryan stepped toward me.

“This is what you wanted?”

I placed one hand protectively over my stomach.

“No.”

My voice broke for the first time.

“I wanted my husband to stop him.”

That silenced him.

The officers took Grant into the hallway.

Diane followed, demanding his medication, his coat, his lawyer, and eventually blaming me for ruining New Year's.

Brooke stayed behind.

She looked almost frightened.

“Claire.”

I turned toward her.

For years, Brooke had treated me as a convenient credit card with a face.

I had covered her graduate-school deposit.

I had paid the security deposit for her apartment.

I had even quietly covered three months of rent after Ryan told me she was “between opportunities.”

Now she couldn't meet my eyes.

“I didn't know Dad was going to do that.”

“You watched.”

“I froze.”

“You recorded.”

Her eyes widened.

I pointed toward her phone.

“You had it pointed at me before he touched me.”

Brooke went still.

That was when I realized something.

“Why were you recording?”

Ryan looked sharply at her.

Brooke's fingers tightened around the device.

“No reason.”

“Give me the phone.”

She stepped backward.

“No.”

Ryan moved between us.

“Claire, enough.”

I looked at him.

“You know why she was recording.”

He said nothing.

That frightened me more than Grant's shouting.

Mr. Ellis quietly approached.

“Ms. Bennett, the paramedics are downstairs.”

I nodded.

I looked at Ryan.

“You're leaving too.”

His face hardened.

“This is my home.”

“No.”

I held up the deed again.

“This is where you lived because I allowed it.”

“We're married.”

“Not for much longer.”

His eyes flashed.

“You can't throw me out tonight.”

“Security can escort you to a hotel.”

“I don't have to go.”

Mr. Ellis spoke calmly.

“Mr. Bennett isn't listed as an owner.”

Ryan snapped.

“My name is Whitmore.”

I looked at him.

“And that's the first thing you've said tonight that is completely true.”

Ryan stared at me with a hatred I had never seen before.

Then he leaned closer.

“You have no idea what you're doing.”

I thought he meant the marriage.

I thought he meant the family.

I was wrong.

He lowered his voice.

“If you start digging into money, Claire, you're going to find things you won't understand.”

I felt cold despite the heat in the room.

“What money?”

Ryan immediately realized he had said too much.

He picked up his coat.

“Nothing.”

Then he walked toward the door.

Brooke followed.

But before she crossed the threshold, she looked back at me.

May you like

And mouthed two words.

Check Grant.
