Chapter 17 - THE NIGHT THE EMPIRE CHOSE SIDES
Dominic did not come to negotiate.
He came to erase evidence.
Emergency power failed.
The building plunged into darkness.
Aaron’s security teams returned fire from the outer corridors.
Nathan pulled Margaret behind a reinforced console.
Samuel reached Evan.
Victoria and Daniel secured the archive drives.
Dominic’s voice came through the building speakers.
“Samuel.”
“Thirty years of hiding and you still destroy everything you touch.”
Samuel looked toward the ceiling.
Dominic continued.
“Bring me the ledger and the rings.”
“I walk away.”
Nathan whispered.
“He’s lying.”
Samuel smiled faintly.
“Dominic has been lying since we were twenty.”
Evan looked at Samuel.
“You knew him that long?”
“Longer.”
Samuel moved toward the intercom.
“You killed Jacqueline.”
Silence.
Evan froze.
Dominic answered.
“She chose you.”
Samuel closed his eyes.
Evan’s face changed completely.
“Richard told me she died in childbirth.”
Samuel looked at him.
“She survived.”
“For six years.”
Evan whispered.
“Where?”
“Dominic kept her hidden.”
Dominic’s voice returned.
“She betrayed the family.”
Evan stepped toward the speaker.
“You killed my mother?”
Nathan saw the moment everything inside Evan shifted.
Not toward rage.
Toward clarity.
Dominic had built his loyalty on a lie.
Samuel continued.
“Jacqueline tried to escape with you.”
“Richard helped Dominic stop her.”
Evan looked at Nathan.
“Is that in the ledger?”
Nathan opened the recovered pages.
Samuel pointed to a coded entry.
J.R.
Final settlement.
Evan stared.
His hands shook.
Then he took Richard’s second black ring from Nathan’s evidence case.
“What are you doing?”
Evan looked at Margaret.
“Ending his authority.”
He placed Richard’s ring on the server desk.
Then smashed the black stone with a metal emergency tool.
At that moment, the building lights returned.
Aaron’s voice came through Nathan’s earpiece.
“Dominic’s people are retreating.”
Nathan frowned.
“Why?”
Aaron replied.
“Police.”
“Federal teams.”
“Everyone.”
Victoria looked at Nathan.
“I sent the account files to investigators before we came.”
Nathan stared at her.
She swallowed.
“I figured you wouldn’t trust me enough to ask.”
He almost smiled.
“You’re learning.”
Dominic was arrested in the parking garage.
Richard was taken into federal custody before sunrise.
The second ledger became evidence.
The illegal portions of the old network were exposed.
But Whitmore Global remained standing.
For the first time in decades, the families could no longer hide behind silence.
Nathan thought the war was over.
Then Aaron approached him.
“There’s a problem.”
Nathan looked at him.
“Richard wants to make a statement.”
“Let him.”
“He says it concerns Margaret.”
Margaret turned.
Aaron continued.
“He claims Margaret isn’t Samuel’s oldest child.”
Samuel’s face went white.
Nathan noticed.
“So Richard is telling the truth.”
Margaret stared at her father.
“Dad?”
Samuel slowly sat down.
“There was another daughter.”
Margaret whispered.
“Who?”
