Chapter 16 - EVAN'S REAL PLAN
Samuel understood before anyone else.
“He wants the ledger public.”
Nathan turned.
“What?”
Samuel pointed at the account records.
“Evan never cared about controlling Whitmore Global.”
“He wants to burn everything connected to it.”
Margaret frowned.
“Why?”
Samuel’s face filled with regret.
“Because Richard raised him on lies.”
“Dominic trained him in revenge.”
“And I was never there to tell him the truth.”
Victoria spoke quietly.
“He thinks everyone abandoned him.”
Samuel nodded.
“Exactly.”
Nathan looked at Aaron.
“Where is he?”
“We found activity at Whitmore Data Systems.”
Nathan’s stomach tightened.
Their central digital archive.
If Evan obtained access, he could release decades of records.
Some exposed real crimes committed long before Nathan took control.
Others contained personal data, legitimate contracts, employee information, and national infrastructure clients.
A public dump would destroy innocent people alongside the guilty.
Nathan reached the data center minutes before Evan’s upload completed.
Evan stood inside the server control room.
No guards.
No weapons.
Only a laptop.
“You’re late.”
Nathan looked at the progress bar.
68%.
“Stop it.”
Evan laughed.
“For decades, everyone protected the Whitmore name.”
“I’m going to show the world what it cost.”
Nathan stepped closer.
“Expose Richard.”
“Expose Dominic.”
“Expose every crime you can prove.”
“But not the employees.”
“Not families who had nothing to do with this.”
Evan’s expression stayed hard.
“They benefited.”
“No.”
“They worked.”
Evan looked at him.
“Easy for the king to say.”
Nathan surprised him.
“Then take the company.”
Evan stopped.
Nathan continued.
“Challenge Margaret.”
“Take my shares.”
“Take every building with Whitmore written on it.”
“But you don’t get to destroy thousands of innocent lives because you hate your father.”
“He isn’t my father.”
“I’m not talking about Richard.”
Evan’s face changed.
Samuel entered behind Nathan.
Evan went still.
Samuel walked forward alone.
“I abandoned you.”
Evan looked away.
“I believed Jacqueline died with the baby.”
“She didn’t.”
“Richard told me you were his son.”
“I was a coward.”
Samuel’s voice broke.
“When I learned the truth, you were already seventeen.”
“Richard threatened Margaret.”
“I chose silence again.”
Evan laughed bitterly.
“You always choose silence.”
“Yes.”
Samuel nodded.
“And every time, someone I loved paid for it.”
The upload reached 81%.
Samuel continued.
“I won’t ask you to forgive me.”
“I’ll ask you not to become us.”
Evan stared at him.
The number reached 89%.
Margaret entered.
She stood beside Samuel.
Evan looked from his father to his sister.
Margaret removed the black ring.
She placed it on the desk between them.
“You want the Ellis inheritance?”
“Take it.”
Evan frowned.
“I’m not fighting you.”
Margaret continued.
“But if you take it, you take responsibility with it.”
“For Ruth’s paycheck.”
“For the gardener.”
“For the injured maintenance worker.”
“For every employee Victoria treated like furniture.”
“You don’t inherit buildings.”
“You inherit people who depend on what those buildings provide.”
The upload reached 94%.
Evan stared at the ring.
Then at the screen.
97%.
Nathan did not move.
98%.
99%.
Evan closed his eyes.
Then he hit CANCEL.
The room went silent.
