Chapter 12 - THE CHAPEL BENEATH THE LAKE

The old Whitmore chapel had not burned accidentally.

Nathan learned that before sunset.

County records showed the fire had occurred six weeks after Samuel disappeared in 1998.

Insurance records called it electrical.

Eleanor’s private papers called it necessary.

The property had later been flooded during the expansion of a private reservoir.

Most of the old stone foundation remained underwater.

Margaret stared at the map.

“My father used to take me there.”

Nathan looked at her.

“For what?”

“He said some promises should never be made in offices.”

They arrived at the lake after dark.

Divers found the chapel foundation forty feet below the surface.

Inside a sealed stone cavity was a stainless-steel case.

Nathan opened it aboard the boat.

Inside lay the second ledger.

Not thousands of pages.

Only forty-three.

Every page contained names, ownership percentages, agreements, and coded annotations.

Margaret found her father’s handwriting immediately.

Nathan found Richard’s name.

Beside it Samuel had written one sentence.

NEVER ALLOW R.W. TO CONTROL SUCCESSION.

Then Margaret found the authorization document.

Samuel Ellis had assigned the trust to his bloodline.

But below his signature was a second clause.

If no Ellis heir willingly accepts responsibility, stewardship transfers to Eleanor Whitmore and subsequently to her eldest living child.

Nathan.

Margaret stared at him.

“You were the backup.”

Nathan nodded.

“That’s why my mother gave me the ring.”

“No.”

Margaret pointed to another line.

Custodian must voluntarily place seal upon Trustee.

Nathan had done exactly that.

Victoria had been wrong.

Richard had been wrong.

The activation was valid.

Two witnesses were required only for involuntary succession.

Nathan smiled for the first time in two days.

“Richard is about to have a terrible board meeting.”

Then Margaret’s expression changed.

“What?”

She pointed at the final page.

There was another beneficiary.

Not named.

Only identified by initials.

E.W.

Nathan frowned.

“Eleanor Whitmore?”

Margaret shook her head.

“Your mother was already listed.”

They kept reading.

Secondary blood heir through Samuel Ellis.

Nathan stared.

Samuel had another child.

Margaret had a sibling.

Unknown even to her.

Nathan turned to Michael.

“Find every record connected to Samuel.”

Hours later, Michael called.

“There was one birth certificate.”

Margaret gripped the phone.

“Name?”

Michael hesitated.

“Mother listed as Jacqueline Rainer.”

Margaret froze.

Rainer.

Dominic’s younger sister.

Samuel and a Rainer woman had a child.

“What name?”

Michael answered.

“Evan.”

Nathan thought he had misheard.

“Evan Whitmore?”

“No.”

Michael’s voice lowered.

“Evan Ellis.”

Nathan and Margaret looked at each other.

Then everything clicked.

Richard’s supposedly dead son.

Evan Whitmore.

The man inside Blackstone Crown.

He was not Richard’s biological son.

He was Samuel’s.

Margaret’s half-brother.

May you like

And that meant Evan did not need to marry Margaret to control the trust.

He could challenge her by blood.
