Chapter 9 - THE LAST OFFER

Charles requested to see Ethan alone.

No estate.

No office.

No lawyers.

A private hospital room.

Ethan almost refused.

Olivia convinced him to go.

“Not for him.”

“For you.”

Charles looked smaller in the hospital bed.

The powerful man Ethan remembered had disappeared beneath a thin blanket.

Machines hummed softly around him.

Ethan stood near the door.

“You wanted to see me.”

Charles studied him.

“You look like your grandfather.”

Ethan said nothing.

“I used to hate when people said that.”

Charles’s voice was weak.

“Your grandfather never trusted me.”

“Maybe he had reasons.”

Charles smiled faintly.

“He always liked you.”

“You never did.”

The smile disappeared.

“That’s not true.”

Ethan pulled a chair closer but did not sit.

“You threatened my wife.”

“I protected this family.”

“You protected control.”

Charles looked toward the window.

“There’s a difference?”

“Yes.”

Ethan finally sat.

“One has people in it.”

Charles closed his eyes.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Charles said something Ethan never expected.

“I was afraid of you.”

Ethan frowned.

“When?”

“From the time you were nineteen.”

“Why?”

“You questioned everything.”

Charles looked at him.

“Derek wanted approval.”

“You wanted truth.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“So you punished me for it.”

“I tried to make you useful.”

“You tried to make me obedient.”

Charles looked away.

That silence was an admission.

Then he reached toward a folder beside the bed.

Inside was a proposed settlement.

Charles would transfer control of the Heritage Trust to Ethan.

The estate.

Several properties.

Voting shares.

In exchange, Ethan would stop cooperating with investigators and publicly state that the financial issues resulted from accounting errors.

Ethan closed the folder.

“You’re trying to buy me.”

“I’m giving you what you wanted.”

“No.”

Ethan stood.

“You’re giving me what you think I wanted.”

Charles’s face tightened.

“Do you understand what this estate is worth?”

“Yes.”

“The land alone—”

“I don’t care.”

“You will.”

Charles’s old voice returned for a moment.

“When Northstar fails.”

Ethan smiled.

“There you are.”

Charles stared at him.

“The man at the staircase.”

He stepped closer to the bed.

“You still think money is the only reason people stay.”

Ethan placed the settlement on the table.

“That’s why everyone eventually leaves you.”

Charles’s breathing became heavier.

“You think you won?”

“No.”

Ethan looked at him for a long time.

“I think Olivia survived.”

“I think Aria is happy.”

“I think I wake up every morning in a home where nobody is afraid.”

His voice softened.

“That’s enough.”

He turned toward the door.

Charles spoke again.

“Ethan.”

He stopped.

“If Derek goes down, the company may go with him.”

Ethan looked back.

“Then maybe it should.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“What about the employees?”

That question hit differently.

Thousands of people depended on Whitmore Industries.

They had mortgages.

Families.

Retirement accounts.

Most had nothing to do with Charles’s crimes.

Ethan realized the trap.

If he allowed the company to collapse, innocent people would suffer.

If he tried to save it, he risked becoming trapped inside the empire again.

Charles watched him.

For the first time in years, the old man smiled.

He knew exactly what he had done.

He had placed a burden on Ethan that Derek would never carry.

Responsibility.

Ethan left without another word.

Outside the hospital, Olivia waited in the car.

“What did he want?”

“To buy my silence.”

“You said no.”

“Yes.”

She studied him.

“There’s something else.”

Ethan nodded.

“The company may collapse.”

Olivia understood immediately.

“How many employees?”

“Nearly eleven thousand.”

She looked through the windshield.

“And if it fails?”

“Pensions could disappear.”

“Jobs.”

“Healthcare.”

“Everything.”

Olivia was quiet.

Then she took his hand.

“Saving innocent people doesn’t mean saving Charles.”

Ethan looked at her.

“It might mean taking control.”

“Then take control.”

“I told myself I never wanted it.”

Olivia squeezed his fingers.

“Wanting power and accepting responsibility are not the same thing.”

That night, Ethan called Rebecca.

“I need you to show me how bad the company really is.”

Her answer came without hesitation.

“Come tomorrow morning.”

The war had changed again.

Now Ethan was no longer fighting only to destroy what Charles built.

He might have to save it.
