Chapter 12 - THE VANISHING WITNESS

For forty-eight hours, nobody knew whether Martin Crowe was alive.

His car was found near an abandoned railway station.

The driver’s door was open.

Blood stained the seat.

His phone was gone.

News networks connected his disappearance to the Whitmore investigation immediately.

Derek denied involvement.

His attorney called the suggestion ridiculous.

Ethan did not believe him.

Then a package arrived at Northstar.

Inside was Martin’s watch.

Olivia stared at it.

“He sent this?”

“No.”

Ethan examined the packaging.

No note.

No fingerprints.

Nothing.

Rebecca arrived moments later.

“We have a problem.”

Ethan almost laughed.

“You think?”

“Martin accessed the protected accounting archive before he disappeared.”

“What did he take?”

“Copies of everything.”

Olivia folded her arms.

“So either he was preparing insurance for himself.”

“Or Derek forced him.”

Rebecca nodded.

An hour later, Ethan received a call from an unknown number.

Martin’s voice.

“I need you to listen.”

Ethan activated recording.

“Where are you?”

“Don’t ask.”

“Are you hurt?”

“I’m alive.”

“What happened?”

Martin sounded exhausted.

“Derek found my daughter.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Martin had one adult daughter living abroad.

“He threatened her?”

“He sent photographs.”

Olivia’s face hardened.

Martin continued.

“I agreed to meet him.”

“The warehouse?”

“Yes.”

“He wanted copies of the records.”

“Did you give them to him?”

“I gave him something.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“What?”

“A corrupted drive.”

Despite everything, Ethan almost smiled.

Martin continued.

“He realized it after the fire.”

“What blood was in your car?”

“Mine.”

“What happened?”

“He had someone hit me.”

Olivia covered her mouth.

“Where are you?”

“I can’t tell you.”

“You need police protection.”

“I don’t trust anyone around Derek.”

“You trusted me enough to call.”

Silence.

Then Martin whispered.

“There is one record your father never knew I kept.”

“What?”

“A recording.”

Ethan’s pulse increased.

“Of what?”

“Charles and Derek.”

“When?”

“The night Olivia fell.”

Ethan stood.

Olivia froze.

Martin continued.

“The next morning, Derek came to the office.”

“He was panicking.”

“Charles told him the cameras had been handled.”

Ethan gripped the phone.

“You recorded them?”

“By accident at first.”

“I was dictating notes.”

“Then I realized what they were saying.”

“What did Charles say?”

Martin hesitated.

“He said if Olivia lost the baby, they would call it tragic but convenient.”

The room went silent.

Olivia sat down slowly.

Ethan felt something inside him break all over again.

Martin continued.

“I’m sorry.”

“Where is the recording?”

“In a safe place.”

“Martin.”

“If something happens to me, Rebecca will receive instructions.”

Rebecca looked stunned.

“You included me?”

“Yes.”

Martin coughed.

“I have to go.”

“No.”

Ethan’s voice sharpened.

“You don’t disappear again.”

“I don’t have a choice.”

“You do.”

“You helped my father for twenty-four years.”

“You want to make it right?”

“Come back and testify.”

Martin was silent.

Ethan continued.

“Not for me.”

“For every employee whose pension you helped steal.”

“For Olivia.”

“For your daughter.”

“For yourself.”

The line remained quiet.

Then Martin whispered.

“Give me twenty-four hours.”

The call ended.

Olivia stood near the window.

Ethan approached her.

She did not cry.

That frightened him more.

“Convenient.”

Her voice was flat.

“He said losing Aria would have been convenient.”

Ethan wrapped his arms around her.

For years, Olivia had believed the cruelty at the staircase had been impulsive.

Derek’s violence.

Charles’s coldness.

Now she understood how deeply unwanted she had been.

Ethan held her tighter.

“He was wrong.”

Olivia closed her eyes.

“Yes.”

She looked toward the family photographs on the wall.

Aria at three.

Aria at seven.

Aria missing her front teeth.

Aria laughing beneath a sprinkler.

Olivia’s expression slowly changed.

“He was wrong about everything.”

Twenty-one hours later, Martin Crowe walked into the district attorney’s office accompanied by two federal agents.

He carried the recording.
