Chapter 5 - THE FIRST CRACK

Six months later, Derek was indicted.

The charges were less severe than Ethan wanted.

But they were enough.

Assault.

Witness intimidation.

Obstruction-related allegations connected to the security footage.

Charles was not charged.

Not yet.

Derek arrived at court wearing an expensive navy suit.

He smiled for cameras.

When he passed Olivia in the hallway, he slowed.

“You ruined this family.”

Olivia looked directly at him.

“No.”

She glanced toward Ethan.

“You did that yourself.”

Derek’s smile disappeared.

The trial became local news.

Then national news.

People were fascinated by the story of two brothers from a powerful dynasty turning against each other.

Television hosts debated the Whitmore empire.

Former employees started calling reporters.

A contractor claimed Charles had pressured him to falsify invoices.

A former executive described hidden payments.

Rebecca’s investigation suddenly had witnesses.

Ethan realized the staircase had not created the corruption.

It had simply exposed it.

Meanwhile, he and Olivia built a life with almost nothing.

Ethan began consulting for small businesses.

He helped family companies restructure debt.

He advised owners who had been ignored by larger firms.

His first office was a rented room above a bakery.

His desk came from Marcus’s garage.

His chair squeaked.

Olivia handled scheduling while caring for Aria.

By the end of the first year, they had twelve clients.

By the second, they had forty-three.

Ethan called the company Northstar Advisory.

Olivia chose the name.

“Because we need something that points forward.”

Ethan smiled.

“And because every other decent name was already taken?”

“That too.”

Their lives remained difficult.

But they were theirs.

Then came the verdict.

Derek was found guilty on multiple counts.

Olivia closed her eyes when the decision was read.

Ethan felt no celebration.

Only release.

Derek turned toward him before deputies led him away.

“This isn’t over.”

Ethan believed him.

Charles waited outside the courthouse.

He ignored reporters and approached Ethan.

Olivia stood beside him.

Charles looked older.

Not weaker.

Older.

“You’re proud of yourself?”

Ethan said nothing.

“You put your brother in prison.”

“Derek put himself there.”

Charles’s jaw tightened.

“One day Aria will learn what you did to your own family.”

Olivia stepped forward.

“One day Aria will learn exactly what they did to hers.”

Charles looked at her with contempt.

“You won’t last.”

Olivia smiled.

“You said that two years ago.”

That was the first time Ethan saw uncertainty in his father’s face.

Small.

Almost invisible.

But it was there.

Charles turned away.

That night, Ethan and Olivia celebrated Aria’s second birthday.

Marcus brought a cake shaped like a star.

Rebecca arrived late with a stack of files.

After Aria fell asleep, she placed the files on the kitchen table.

“I found something.”

Ethan groaned.

“You always say that right before destroying my sleep schedule.”

“This might be worth losing sleep.”

She opened the first folder.

Whitmore Industries had borrowed heavily against several subsidiaries.

The company looked profitable publicly.

Internally, it was dangerously leveraged.

Charles was using new debt to cover losses.

Ethan studied the numbers.

“This doesn’t make sense.”

Rebecca pointed to a series of transfers.

“It does if money is leaving faster than anyone knows.”

“Derek?”

“Partly.”

“And the rest?”

Rebecca looked at him.

“That’s what we need to find out.”

Olivia came into the kitchen.

“Is this about Charles?”

“Yes.”

She sat beside Ethan.

For two years, they had fought for survival.

Now the balance was shifting.

Charles still had the estate.

The company.

The lawyers.

The private jets.

But Ethan had something his father had never respected.

May you like

Time.

And every month that passed, more people stopped being afraid of the Whitmore name.
