Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING

They watched the video only once.

That was enough.

The footage showed Olivia standing near the top of the staircase with a bag of baby clothes.

Derek approached from behind.

There was no accident.

No misunderstanding.

He grabbed her arm.

Olivia pulled away.

Derek shoved her.

She disappeared down the staircase.

The camera angle did not show every impact.

It did not need to.

Then Charles entered the frame.

He looked down.

He saw Olivia lying below.

And instead of rushing to help her, he turned toward Derek.

The video had audio.

Charles’s voice was clear.

“You need to control yourself.”

Derek replied.

“She was asking for it.”

Then came laughter.

Olivia closed the laptop.

Her face had gone pale.

Ethan sat beside her.

“We don’t have to watch it again.”

“I never want to.”

Rebecca copied the file.

“We need to preserve this in several locations.”

Ethan nodded.

Clara looked anxious.

“If Charles discovers I gave you this, I’ll lose everything.”

Olivia walked toward her.

“You may have saved my life.”

Clara’s eyes filled.

“I should have spoken sooner.”

“You’re speaking now.”

That night, Ethan could not sleep.

He sat beside Aria’s crib.

His daughter breathed softly beneath a yellow blanket.

For the first time since leaving the estate, Ethan allowed himself to imagine Derek in prison.

The thought did not make him happy.

It made him feel safe.

The following morning, they took the recording to Detective Samuel Grant.

Grant watched it without speaking.

When it ended, he leaned back.

“Where did this come from?”

Ethan glanced at Rebecca.

“An internal security archive.”

Grant studied him.

“This changes the case.”

“How much?”

“A lot.”

Within forty-eight hours, Derek was brought in for questioning.

Charles responded immediately.

Whitmore attorneys flooded the district attorney’s office.

Media consultants appeared on television.

Anonymous sources described Olivia as unstable.

A gossip website published photographs of Ethan carrying boxes into Marcus’s apartment.

The headline called him THE DISGRACED WHITMORE HEIR.

Olivia stared at the article.

“They’re trying to make us look pathetic.”

Ethan took her phone.

“They’re afraid.”

“How do you know?”

“Because my father only spends this much money when he’s afraid.”

Then the first real blow came.

Clara disappeared.

She failed to arrive at work.

Her phone was disconnected.

Rebecca drove to her home.

The front door was unlocked.

The archive room had been emptied.

Ethan called Detective Grant.

Grant arrived with two officers.

There were no signs of violence.

But Clara was gone.

Olivia held Aria tighter that night.

“You think Charles did something?”

“I don’t know.”

“You do know.”

Ethan looked at her.

She was right.

He knew what his father was capable of.

The next day, an envelope appeared under their apartment door.

No stamp.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of Olivia pushing Aria’s stroller.

Across the bottom, someone had written three words.

LET IT GO.

Ethan’s hands shook with rage.

Olivia took the photograph.

Then she did something that surprised him.

She smiled.

“They made a mistake.”

“What?”

“They threatened the wrong mother.”

She placed the photograph into a plastic sleeve.

“Call Detective Grant.”

Ethan watched her.

The terrified woman from the hospital was still part of her.

But she was no longer in control.

Olivia had spent months believing survival meant staying quiet.

Now she understood something else.

Silence was what men like Charles depended on.

By sunset, the threatening photograph was in police evidence.

The security recording had been authenticated.

Derek’s attorney began negotiating.

Charles refused.

“He won’t let Derek plead guilty,” Ethan said.

Rebecca looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because a plea means admitting the video is real.”

“And if the video is real?”

Ethan stared at the papers covering the table.

“Then people start asking what else happened inside that house.”

Rebecca’s phone rang.

She answered.

For several seconds, she listened without speaking.

Then she looked at Ethan.

“They found Clara.”

Olivia stood.

“Is she alive?”

Rebecca nodded.

“She’s alive.”

“Where?”

“In another state.”

Ethan frowned.

“Why would she leave?”

Rebecca’s expression hardened.

“She says someone offered her two hundred thousand dollars to disappear.”

“Who?”

“She never saw his face.”

Ethan did not need to ask.

He already knew.

His father had started a war.

The difference was that Ethan was finally ready to fight one.
