Chapter 19 - Lily’s Final Lesson

Daniel almost collapsed when he heard the words.
Marcus immediately locked down every exit from the school.
Police arrived within minutes.
The teacher insisted Lily had been present after lunch.
Then, during art class, a substitute aide told her Daniel was waiting downstairs.
No substitute aide had been scheduled.
Security footage showed Lily walking calmly through a side corridor holding a woman’s hand.
The woman wore a baseball cap.
When the camera caught her face, Daniel stared in disbelief.
Nora.
“She took my daughter.”
Marcus zoomed in.
“Look at Lily.”
Daniel did.
Lily was not struggling.
She was holding Nora’s hand willingly.
Then Nora looked directly at the camera and raised two fingers.
Daniel frowned.
“What does that mean?”
Marcus replayed the footage.
Nora touched her ear.
Then raised two fingers again.
“Two.”
Daniel remembered something.
Rachel used to play a game with Lily when she was a toddler.
If Rachel ever sent someone else to pick her up, she would give that person a secret number.
Two meant danger.
Nora was warning them.
She had not taken Lily.
She was moving Lily away from someone.
Daniel’s phone rang.
Nora.
“Where are you?”
“Listen carefully.”
Her voice was breathless.
“A man came to the school using your identification.”
Daniel’s blood froze.
“He looked nothing like you, but he had documents, electronic authorization, everything.”
“Who?”
“I followed him.”
“How did you know?”
“Claire warned me someone might try to take Lily after the press conference.”
“Where is Lily?”
“With me.”
“Put her on.”
“Daddy?”
Daniel closed his eyes.
“I’m here, baby.”
“Are you okay?”
“I am now.”
Then a crash sounded through the phone.
Nora screamed.
The call went dead.
Marcus traced the last signal to an abandoned Whitmore distribution center.
Daniel and police arrived eleven minutes later.
Inside, they found Nora injured near a loading bay.
Lily was hiding behind stacked boxes exactly as Nora had told her.
Daniel ran to her.
Lily threw herself into his arms.
“Daddy.”
“I have you.”
He held her so tightly she complained she could not breathe.
Daniel loosened his grip immediately.
“Where is the man?”
Lily pointed upstairs.
Police moved.
Minutes later, they brought down a handcuffed suspect.
Daniel recognized him.
It was not a stranger.
It was one of Henry’s former private security officers.
The man had worked around the family when Daniel was a teenager.
Investigators found documents in his bag.
A false passport for Lily.
Travel arrangements.
And written instructions.
The orders were signed with initials.
H.W.
Henry.
Daniel stared at them.
Even from custody, Henry had activated a final contingency.
He had planned to move Lily overseas.
Not for ransom.
Not to hurt her.
To possess her.
To raise the “Whitmore heir” outside Daniel’s control.
Daniel felt a level of hatred he had never known.
But Lily touched his face.
“Daddy.”
He looked at her.
“Mommy said bad people want you to get angry.”
Daniel froze.
“What?”
Lily looked confused by his reaction.
“Mommy told me.”
“When?”
“A long time ago.”
Daniel stared at her.
Lily had been three when Rachel died.
“Do you remember Mommy saying that?”
Lily nodded.
“She said if I ever got scared, I should look for the person trying to help instead of the person yelling the loudest.”
Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.
That was Rachel.
Even after three years, Rachel was still guiding their daughter.
Daniel kissed Lily’s forehead.
This time, he did not chase Henry in anger.
He did something Henry had never expected.
May you like
He went home.
He let the law do the chasing.
