Chapter 15 - The Night Rachel Died

Marcus’s team secured Lily first.

Nora appeared minutes later with police officers coming through the east wing.

Daniel was furious she had ignored him.

He was also relieved.

Margaret was captured near the greenhouse.

Henry was detained in the library.

For the first time in seventeen years, Henry Whitmore’s fingerprints were taken by police.

Lily clung to Daniel.

“I want to go home.”

“We are going home.”

Before they left, Margaret asked to speak with Daniel.

He almost refused.

Then she held up Rachel’s missing journal.

“You want the truth?”

Daniel sat across from her in the estate study while police watched.

Margaret opened the journal.

One missing page contained Ethan’s confession to Rachel.

Ethan had given Nora an emergency access code to Daniel’s house years earlier.

But Nora had not used it the night Rachel died.

Someone else had.

Charles Benton.

Daniel’s stomach turned.

“Charles was there?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Rachel called him.”

Daniel looked confused.

“She trusted him?”

“She believed he was helping her build a legal case.”

Margaret laughed bitterly.

“Rachel was brilliant, but she made one terrible mistake.”

“She trusted a lawyer.”

“She trusted the wrong frightened man.”

Charles had been laundering money for Henry through legal trusts.

Rachel confronted him.

She promised not to expose him if he testified against Henry.

Charles agreed.

Then he panicked.

He told Margaret.

Margaret told Henry.

Henry ordered them to retrieve Rachel’s evidence.

“Not kill her?”

Margaret hesitated.

“Not explicitly.”

Daniel hated the careful wording.

“What happened?”

“Charles entered the house.”

“Then?”

“Rachel surprised him.”

“They argued.”

“She threatened to call police.”

Margaret lowered her eyes.

“Charles tried to take her phone.”

Daniel could barely breathe.

“She fell?”

“No.”

Margaret shook her head.

“She became ill during the argument.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Because you had already been making her sick.”

Margaret said nothing.

That silence was enough.

“You poisoned my wife.”

“I exposed her repeatedly to something that caused symptoms.”

Daniel’s face twisted with rage.

The investigator in the room immediately interrupted.

“Do not discuss technical details.”

Margaret nodded.

Daniel did not need technical details.

He needed the truth.

“She collapsed.”

“Yes.”

“Did Charles call an ambulance?”

“No.”

Daniel’s eyes filled with tears.

“He left her there?”

“He called me first.”

“And you?”

“I told him to wait.”

Daniel stood.

“You let her die.”

Margaret’s composure finally cracked.

“She was going to destroy everything.”

“She was my wife.”

“And Henry had spent seventeen years building a system nobody could expose.”

Daniel stepped toward her.

The officers moved closer.

Margaret looked at him.

“Rachel was still alive when the ambulance eventually arrived.”

Daniel froze.

“What did you say?”

“She regained consciousness briefly.”

Daniel remembered the hospital.

Doctors had told him Rachel never woke up.

Margaret continued.

“She spoke to someone.”

“Who?”

“I don’t know.”

“You’re lying.”

“I’m not.”

Daniel stared at her.

“She said seven words before she lost consciousness again.”

“What words?”

Margaret looked him directly in the eyes.

“She said, ‘Tell Daniel his father is alive.’”

Daniel felt the room spin.

“Who heard her?”

Margaret smiled bitterly.

“The person who made sure you never did.”

Daniel thought of the hospital records.

The restricted toxicology file.

The paperwork Ethan handled.

Nora watching Lily.

Rebecca disappearing.

Then one name rose above all the others.

The physician who had signed Rachel’s death certificate.

Dr. Samuel Vale.

Daniel knew that name.

Samuel Vale had also signed Henry Whitmore’s death certificate seventeen years earlier.
