Chapter 17 - The Fifth Name

Marcus reopened every security record from the night of the tea.

He compared timestamps.

Door logs.

Phone locations.

Camera failures.

Vehicle movements.

At 3:17 in the morning, he called Daniel downstairs.

“I found something.”

Daniel entered the office in sweatpants and a T-shirt.

Marcus had five photographs on the screen.

Nora.

Ethan.

Rebecca.

Margaret.

And a fifth person.

Daniel leaned closer.

“That’s impossible.”

The photograph showed Rachel’s former nanny, Claire Mason.

Claire had cared for Lily during the first two years of her life.

She had disappeared shortly after Rachel died.

Daniel had assumed she moved to Canada.

“She entered through the service gate at 4:51 p.m.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

“Was she working with Margaret?”

Marcus shook his head.

“There’s no evidence.”

Daniel remembered Claire as gentle.

Quiet.

Protective of Lily.

Rachel had trusted her completely.

He called Rebecca.

She went silent when she heard Claire’s name.

“You know something.”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Rachel knew Claire before Lily was born.”

“How?”

“They went to college together.”

Daniel stared at the phone.

“Rachel told me Claire came through an agency.”

“She lied.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know.”

Marcus searched deeper.

Claire Mason was not her legal name.

Her birth name was Claire Vale.

Daniel went still.

“Vale?”

Rebecca whispered.

“Samuel.”

Marcus nodded.

“His daughter.”

Daniel understood.

Rachel had placed the daughter of the doctor involved in Henry’s fake death inside her own home.

That could not be coincidence.

Federal agents found Claire that afternoon.

She did not run.

She asked to speak with Daniel.

They met in a secured government building.

Claire looked almost exactly as Daniel remembered.

Older.

Sadder.

But calm.

“Did you switch the bottle?”

“Yes.”

Daniel stared at her.

“Why?”

“To stop the plan.”

“You made it more dangerous.”

“No.”

Claire leaned forward.

“The bottle Nora had was not harmless.”

Daniel’s face changed.

“She lied?”

“No.”

“Nora believed it was harmless.”

“Then who gave it to her?”

“Ethan.”

“He believed the same thing.”

“Yes.”

Daniel frowned.

Claire continued.

“Margaret arranged the original bottle.”

“So it was dangerous from the beginning?”

“Yes.”

“Then you switched it with something worse?”

Claire shook her head.

“No.”

Daniel stared at her.

“The sample from the tea—”

“Came from the second bottle.”

“Yes.”

“And the first?”

Claire’s eyes filled with tears.

“Would have been far worse.”

Silence filled the room.

Daniel felt his pulse in his throat.

“You saved me?”

“I tried.”

“Then why didn’t you just tell me?”

“Because Margaret was watching.”

Claire wiped her eyes.

“My father told me years ago what he had done to Henry’s records.”

She had gone to Rachel.

Rachel had convinced Claire to secretly help expose the conspiracy.

After Rachel died, Claire disappeared because Samuel begged her to leave.

But Claire continued monitoring Margaret from a distance.

When she learned about the staged tea incident, she realized Margaret intended to turn Ethan and Nora’s plan into an actual killing.

“So you replaced the bottle.”

“Yes.”

“With something still harmful.”

“I only had seconds.”

Claire looked ashamed.

“I chose something that would create a visible reaction when spilled and make Daniel sick if he drank a small amount, but was less likely to kill him.”

Daniel stared at her.

Lily had still saved him.

The cup had still been dangerous.

But the person Daniel had feared as an unknown killer had actually been trying to reduce the danger.

He almost felt relief.

Then Claire reached into her bag.

“Rachel gave me something before she died.”

She placed a sealed envelope on the table.

Daniel recognized his wife’s handwriting.

It contained one sentence.

If Henry is exposed, watch Lily.

Daniel looked up.

“Why Lily?”

Claire’s voice shook.

May you like

“Because Henry wasn’t protecting his money.”

“He was protecting a bloodline.”
