Chapter 18 - The Bloodline Secret

Daniel hated the word immediately.
“What bloodline?”
Claire looked toward the investigators.
“Henry discovered something before he disappeared.”
Daniel waited.
“Something about Ethan.”
Daniel’s chest tightened.
“What about him?”
“Ethan isn’t Henry’s biological son.”
Daniel stared at her.
“That’s ridiculous.”
“Your mother had an affair.”
“No.”
Claire pushed a document across the table.
It was an old genetic report.
Daniel recognized his mother’s name.
Ethan’s name.
And another man’s.
Thomas Reed.
A former Whitmore executive who died twenty years earlier.
Daniel read the results.
Ethan was Thomas Reed’s son.
Daniel sat back.
“Did Ethan know?”
“No.”
“Did Henry?”
“Yes.”
Claire explained that Henry learned the truth when Ethan was twelve.
He became obsessed with preserving his “real” family line.
Daniel was his only biological son.
That made Lily the next generation Henry considered truly his.
Daniel felt nauseated.
“This is why Rachel wrote to watch Lily?”
“Partly.”
“What else?”
Claire hesitated.
“When Henry staged his death, he created a private trust.”
The trust held assets hidden from regulators and from the Whitmore company.
Its value had grown enormously.
According to its terms, if Henry were legally confirmed alive, the trust reverted to him.
If he died after being exposed, it passed to Daniel.
If Daniel were dead, it passed to Lily.
Daniel stared at her.
“How much?”
“Approximately nine hundred million dollars.”
He almost laughed from disbelief.
“All this for money?”
“No.”
Claire shook her head.
“Henry wanted control.”
“Over Lily?”
“He wanted you to join him.”
Daniel remembered his father’s calm expression at the estate.
Henry had not seemed shocked when Margaret turned against him.
He had seemed almost prepared.
Daniel suddenly understood.
“He allowed himself to be discovered.”
Claire nodded slowly.
“He wanted Margaret exposed.”
“Why?”
“She had become too powerful.”
“Then the tea?”
“Henry did not order Margaret to make it lethal.”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
“He wanted the staged incident.”
“Yes.”
“To push me toward Rachel’s evidence.”
“Yes.”
Daniel stood.
“So my father used my daughter to manipulate me.”
Claire’s eyes lowered.
“Yes.”
Daniel’s anger became almost unbearable.
Henry had treated every person around him like a piece on a board.
Rachel.
Ethan.
Nora.
Margaret.
And now Lily.
That evening, Daniel requested a private meeting with Henry in federal custody.
Henry smiled when he entered.
“You finally understand.”
“I understand that you are sick.”
“I built everything you have.”
“You destroyed everything I loved.”
“Rachel destroyed herself.”
Daniel slammed both hands on the table.
“Do not say her name.”
Henry watched him calmly.
Daniel sat again.
“You wanted Margaret exposed.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted me to find the journals.”
“Yes.”
“You used Ethan and Nora.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Lily might see the cup.”
Henry paused.
“That was not my preference.”
“But it was acceptable.”
Henry said nothing.
Daniel felt something inside him close forever.
“You will never see Lily again.”
Henry’s smile disappeared.
“She is my granddaughter.”
“No.”
Daniel leaned forward.
“She is my daughter.”
Henry’s eyes hardened.
“You cannot erase blood.”
Daniel stood.
“Watch me erase your name.”
For the first time, Henry looked afraid.
Daniel walked out.
The next morning, he announced that Whitmore Medical Technologies would undergo a complete independent audit.
Every illegal account connected to Henry would be turned over to authorities.
Any recoverable hidden funds would be used to compensate victims and support medical charities.
Daniel also filed to remove Henry’s name from the company.

But before the press conference ended, Marcus received a message from Lily’s school.
Lily had vanished from her classroom.
