Chapter 4 - THE LOCKED DRAWER

Adrian did not sleep that night.

Emma slept in a portable crib beside his bed.

Olivia slept across the hall with her bedroom door open.

At two in the morning, Adrian sat on the floor of his office and watched every recording Olivia had saved.

Most were short.

Vanessa criticizing Clara.

Vanessa questioning Olivia.

Vanessa complaining that Emma preferred Clara.

But one video was different.

It had been recorded twelve days earlier.

Olivia had been standing upstairs when she heard Vanessa arguing with Clara inside the office.

The camera showed only part of the doorway.

The audio was clear.

Clara spoke first.

“I wasn’t looking through your things.”

Vanessa answered.

“Then why were you in here?”

“Emma dropped her pacifier under the desk.”

“Convenient.”

“I reached down and saw an envelope.”

“That was private.”

“It had Adrian’s name on it.”

“Everything in this house has Adrian’s name on it.”

Clara’s voice changed.

“This was a bank letter.”

Adrian leaned closer to the screen.

Vanessa said nothing for several seconds.

Then Clara continued.

“It said a new account had been opened.”

“That is none of your business.”

“I agree.”

“Then forget what you saw.”

“I already did.”

“No, you didn’t.”

The video ended.

Adrian sat completely still.

A bank account.

He stood and walked toward the desk.

The bottom drawer had always been locked.

Vanessa told him she kept jewelry receipts and personal documents inside.

Adrian found the spare key in the cabinet.

The drawer opened.

At first, nothing looked unusual.

Receipts.

Old insurance papers.

Warranty documents.

Then he found a blue envelope beneath a stack of folders.

The letter was addressed to him.

He had never seen it.

It confirmed the opening of an investment account four months earlier.

The account included his name.

It also included Vanessa’s.

Adrian frowned.

He opened his banking app.

The account did not appear.

He checked his email.

Nothing.

Then he saw the balance printed near the bottom of the letter.

$184,000.

Adrian stopped breathing for a moment.

He read the number again.

Nearly two hundred thousand dollars.

He kept searching.

A second letter showed a transfer.

Then another.

Then another.

Money had been moved from an account connected to Adrian’s construction company.

His hands began shaking.

At 2:37 a.m., Olivia appeared at the office door.

“Dad?”

Adrian looked up.

She saw the papers.

“You found it.”

He stared at her.

“You knew about this?”

“I knew Clara found something.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“I tried.”

Adrian’s expression collapsed.

Olivia walked into the room.

“Remember when I asked why Vanessa was getting mail from your office bank?”

Adrian remembered.

He had been rushing to a meeting.

He told Olivia not to worry about adult finances.

Another warning dismissed.

Another conversation he had shut down.

Adrian put his face in his hands.

“God.”

Olivia sat on the floor across from him.

For several minutes neither of them spoke.

Finally Adrian looked at her.

“Did Clara say anything else?”

“She said she didn’t know enough to accuse Vanessa of anything.”

“Did Vanessa know Clara saw the letter?”

“Yes.”

Adrian looked at the recordings again.

The timeline suddenly became obvious.

After Clara found the letter, Vanessa’s behavior became more aggressive.

Four days later, the nursery camera stopped working.

Two days after that, Vanessa told Adrian Clara had left the front door unlocked.

The security logs later showed the door had never been opened.

Then Vanessa claimed Clara had given Emma the wrong medicine.

There had been no medicine.

And now the stroller.

Adrian felt sick.

Vanessa was not simply jealous.

She wanted Clara discredited.

She wanted Adrian to stop believing her before Clara ever spoke.

Olivia watched her father slowly understand.

“She wanted Clara gone before Clara told you about the money.”

Adrian nodded.

Then another thought hit him.

“Why didn’t Clara tell me?”

Olivia’s answer hurt more than anything else that night.

“Maybe she thought you wouldn’t believe her.”

Adrian looked toward the dark hallway.

He thought of Clara standing with a red mark across her face.

She had been right.

He had not believed her.

At 3:04 a.m., Adrian called his company’s financial manager.

The man answered on the fourth ring.

“Adrian?”

“I need you to check something.”

“What happened?”

“Pull every transfer made from the operating reserve over the last six months.”

There was a pause.

“Right now?”

“Right now.”

Twenty minutes later, the financial manager called back.

His voice was different.

“Adrian.”

“How bad?”

“I think you need to come into the office.”

“Tell me.”

Another pause.

Then the answer came.

“It isn’t one hundred eighty-four thousand.”

Adrian gripped the phone.

“How much?”

“Just over six hundred thousand dollars.”

Olivia stared at her father.

The man continued.

“And Adrian?”

“Yes?”

“Some of the authorizations have your electronic signature.”

Adrian went cold.

May you like

“I never approved them.”

“I was afraid you were going to say that.”
