Chapter 12 - THE HOUSE BY THE LAKE

The address belonged to a rental house forty minutes outside the city.
Adrian wanted to go.
Detective Mercer told him absolutely not.
Police went instead.
Adrian stayed home with Olivia, Clara, and Emma.
Those forty minutes felt longer than the previous forty-eight hours combined.
Finally Mercer called.
“We found the phone.”
“And Vanessa?”
“No.”
“Who was there?”
“Nobody.”
The phone had been left on a kitchen counter.
Beside it was a folder.
Inside were copies of Rachel’s medical records.
Adrian felt sick.
Vanessa had searched through his personal files.
She had taken pieces of his deepest guilt and turned them into weapons.
Mercer continued.
“There was also a laptop.”
“What’s on it?”
“We don’t know yet.”
“Was it hers?”
“Probably.”
Then Mercer’s voice changed.
“We found something else.”
Adrian waited.
“A handwritten list.”
“What kind of list?”
“Names.”
“Whose names?”
“Yours.”
“Olivia’s.”
“Clara’s.”
“Rosa’s.”
“Trevor’s.”
Adrian felt his chest tighten.
“What was next to the names?”
“Notes.”
He gripped the phone.
“What did mine say?”
Mercer paused.
“Guilt.”
Adrian closed his eyes.
“Olivia?”
“Boarding school.”
“Clara?”
“Money or scandal.”
“Rosa?”
“Immigration fear.”
Adrian’s eyes opened.
Rosa was a legal permanent resident.
But Vanessa apparently believed threatening her immigration status might silence her.
“What about Trevor?”
“Greed.”
Adrian sat down.
Vanessa had cataloged people by vulnerability.
Not love.
Not relationship.
Weakness.
“What else?”
“There was one more name.”
“Who?”
“Emma.”
Adrian stopped breathing.
Clara stepped closer.
“What?”
Adrian held up his hand.
“What did it say beside Emma?”
Mercer hesitated.
Then answered.
“Leverage.”
Clara covered her mouth.
Olivia began crying.
Adrian’s voice turned hollow.
“Find her.”
“We will.”
“No.”
His hand shook.
“You need to find her before she gets near my daughters again.”
“We’re doing everything we can.”
The forensic team began analyzing Vanessa’s laptop.
By morning, they recovered deleted emails.
One email had been sent to Trevor months earlier.
ADRIAN IS EASY WHEN HE FEELS GUILTY.
Another said.
OLIVIA IS THE ONLY PERSON HE WILL ALWAYS CHOOSE OVER ME.
A third said.
IF CLARA KEEPS WATCHING EVERYTHING, SHE HAS TO GO.
Then investigators found an unsent draft.
It had been written the night before the stroller incident.
The subject line read.
FINAL STEP.
The body contained only three sentences.
MAKE CLARA LOOK RECKLESS.
MAKE ADRIAN REACT BEFORE HE THINKS.
AFTER THAT, HE’LL NEVER BELIEVE HER.
Adrian read the draft twice.
The third time, he stopped.
Because Vanessa had understood him perfectly.
She knew he would react before thinking.
She had counted on it.
The slap had not been part of her written plan.
But his impulsiveness had completed it for her.
That realization was almost unbearable.
Clara stood across the kitchen.
“She knew you.”
Adrian looked at her.
“Yes.”
Clara shook her head.
“No.”
“She knew your worst habits.”
“That isn’t the same thing.”
Adrian frowned.
Clara continued.
“You made terrible choices.”
“But Vanessa doesn’t get to own them.”
“You do.”
Adrian absorbed the words.
Clara looked at him steadily.
“Take responsibility.”
“Change.”
“But don’t let her turn your shame into another tool she can control.”
Adrian nodded slowly.
“Why are you helping me?”
Clara looked toward Olivia and Emma.
“I’m helping them.”
The answer was fair.
Then every phone in the room buzzed.
An emergency alert from the neighborhood security app appeared.
A woman matching Vanessa’s description had been seen near Olivia’s school.
Adrian looked at Olivia.
She was home.
Safe.
Then Clara’s face changed.
“What?”
Clara grabbed her own phone.
“My sister.”
Adrian frowned.
“What about her?”
“She’s picking up some paperwork from my old apartment.”
Her fingers moved quickly.
“She just texted me.”
Adrian walked closer.
The message contained a photograph.
A black SUV was parked across from Clara’s building.

The driver’s face was visible through the windshield.
Vanessa.
