Chapter 3 - CLARA WALKED OUT

The police arrived nineteen minutes later.

By then Vanessa had stopped crying.

She sat on the far end of the sofa with her arms crossed and her attorney’s number open on her phone.

Adrian remained near Emma.

Olivia stood beside Clara.

Two officers watched the videos.

They photographed the staircase.

They photographed the stroller.

They photographed the damaged nursery camera cable.

Then one officer asked Clara whether she had been injured.

Clara looked at Adrian.

For a second, he wished the floor would open beneath him.

“Yes.”

The officer noticed the mark on her face.

“From the stroller incident?”

Clara hesitated.

“No.”

The officer looked toward Adrian.

Clara spoke before he could.

“Adrian hit me.”

Olivia looked away.

Vanessa gave a bitter little smile.

Adrian saw it.

He had never wanted to take back a moment more desperately in his life.

The officer separated them.

Adrian answered every question.

He did not minimize what he had done.

He did not call it an accident.

He did not blame panic.

“I slapped her.”

The officer asked why.

“I believed she had endangered my daughter.”

“Did she threaten you?”

“No.”

“Did she touch you?”

“No.”

“Did she have the baby when you struck her?”

“No.”

“Was there any immediate threat?”

“No.”

Each answer sounded worse than the one before it.

Because each answer was the truth.

When the officer finished, Adrian sat alone at the kitchen table.

He could hear Clara speaking quietly in the hallway.

Emma had finally fallen asleep in Olivia’s arms.

Vanessa remained in the living room.

Her attorney had told her not to answer more questions.

The police asked Vanessa to leave the house while the incident was reviewed.

She refused at first.

Then Adrian spoke.

“You’re leaving.”

Vanessa stared at him.

“This is my home.”

“Not tonight.”

“You don’t get to throw me out.”

“I’m asking you to stay somewhere else while Emma is here.”

Vanessa laughed.

“You think I’m a danger to her?”

Adrian looked at the staircase.

“I watched you push her stroller.”

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“I told you why.”

“That explanation made it worse.”

She grabbed her purse.

“You’re going to regret choosing a nanny over your wife.”

Clara stiffened.

Adrian stood.

“This isn’t about choosing Clara.”

“Of course it is.”

“No.”

His voice became quiet.

“This is about choosing my children.”

Vanessa looked at Olivia.

Something bitter flashed across her face.

“That girl has hated me since I moved in.”

Olivia stared at her.

“I didn’t hate you.”

Vanessa rolled her eyes.

Olivia continued.

“I just stopped trusting you.”

Vanessa walked toward the front door.

Before she left, she turned toward Adrian.

“You’re destroying our marriage because of one bad moment.”

Adrian shook his head.

“No.”

“I’m finally looking at all the moments I ignored.”

The door closed.

The house became silent again.

Clara picked up her bag.

Adrian immediately stood.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“Clara.”

She did not look at him.

“You shouldn’t drive with your knee like that.”

“I’ll call a ride.”

“At least let me take you to urgent care.”

“No.”

“I can pay for—”

“No.”

Her voice was stronger now.

Adrian stopped talking.

Clara turned toward Olivia.

“Thank you.”

Olivia hugged her.

Clara’s expression broke for the first time.

She held Olivia tightly.

“You did the right thing.”

Olivia whispered into her shoulder.

“I’m sorry I didn’t stop it sooner.”

“You’re fourteen.”

Clara pulled back.

“None of this was your responsibility.”

Then Clara looked toward Emma.

She walked slowly to Olivia.

She touched the baby’s tiny hand.

Emma’s fingers immediately closed around Clara’s index finger.

Clara closed her eyes.

Adrian saw tears running down her cheeks.

When she looked at him again, the warmth was gone.

“I saved your daughter today.”

“I know.”

“You hit me for it.”

Adrian swallowed.

“I know.”

“I cannot walk back into this house tomorrow and pretend that didn’t happen.”

“I’m not asking you to pretend.”

“I’m resigning.”

Olivia’s head lifted.

“Clara, no.”

Clara hugged her again.

“I need to.”

Adrian felt the words like a physical blow.

“I understand.”

Clara looked surprised.

Maybe she expected him to argue.

He wanted to.

But he had already taken enough choices away from her that day.

“I’ll make sure you’re paid everything you’re owed.”

“This isn’t about money.”

“I know.”

She moved toward the door.

Adrian followed only far enough to open it.

Clara stepped outside.

A car was already turning into the driveway.

Before she left, she looked back.

“Watch the rest of Olivia’s recordings.”

Adrian frowned.

“There are more?”

Clara nodded.

“One of them will explain why Vanessa wanted me gone so badly.”

May you like

Then Clara got into the car.

And Adrian realized the stroller might have been only one part of something much bigger.
