Chapter 1 - THE SCREEN DID NOT LIE

The living room went completely silent.
Only Emma’s soft crying could be heard.
Adrian stood frozen in front of the television with his daughter pressed against his chest.
A few seconds earlier, he had been certain Clara was responsible.
Now the security footage showed something entirely different.
Vanessa stood beside the stroller near the top of the staircase.
She looked toward the hallway.
Then she looked toward the kitchen.
She thought nobody was watching.
Her hand moved toward the stroller.
One quick push.
The wheels rolled forward.
The stroller turned toward the stairs.
Emma began to cry.
Clara appeared from the kitchen almost instantly.
She dropped the towel she was holding.
She ran.
She reached the stroller less than a second before the front wheels crossed the edge of the first step.
Clara grabbed the handle with both hands.
The sudden force pulled her forward.
Her knee slammed against the floor.
She still refused to let go.
She dragged the stroller backward.
Then she lifted Emma out.
Vanessa appeared behind her.
The video showed Vanessa staring at Clara for several seconds.
There was no panic on Vanessa’s face.
There was calculation.
Then Adrian’s car appeared outside the front window.
Vanessa’s expression changed immediately.
She covered her mouth.
She began crying.
She rushed toward Clara.
That was the exact moment Adrian walked through the door.
Olivia paused the recording.
Nobody moved.
Adrian stared at the frozen image of Vanessa standing behind Clara.
His face had lost all color.
Vanessa slowly shook her head.
“That isn’t what happened.”
Olivia looked at her.
“We literally watched it happen.”
Vanessa wiped tears from her cheeks.
“You don’t understand.”
Adrian finally looked at her.
His voice was almost a whisper.
“Explain it.”
Vanessa stepped toward him.
“Adrian, please.”
“Explain what I just watched.”
“It was an accident.”
Olivia’s eyes narrowed.
“You pushed the stroller.”
“I touched it.”
“You pushed it.”
“I was trying to move it away from the hallway.”
Clara finally spoke.
Her voice trembled.
“You looked directly at me before you did it.”
Vanessa turned sharply.
“You stay out of this.”
Clara stared at her.
“You almost sent a baby down a staircase.”
“I said stay out of this.”
Adrian flinched.
Something about Vanessa’s tone broke through the shock.
For the first time, he was hearing the anger that had apparently existed before he came home.
He looked at Clara.
Her left cheek was still red from the slap he had given her.
A faint mark was already forming beneath her eye.
Adrian looked down at his own hand.
The horror on his face deepened.
“Clara.”
She stepped backward.
“Don’t.”
One word.
Quiet.
Firm.
Adrian stopped.
“I didn’t know.”
Clara laughed once, but there was no humor in it.
“You didn’t ask.”
Adrian swallowed.
“I saw Emma crying.”
“And you believed Vanessa.”
“I thought—”
“You didn’t think.”
Clara’s eyes filled with tears.
“You walked into this room, took Emma out of my arms, called me dangerous, and hit me before I could finish one sentence.”
Adrian could not answer.
Olivia looked at her father.
She was fourteen years old, but in that moment her disappointment made Adrian feel smaller than he had ever felt in his life.
“I told you Vanessa was lying before.”
Adrian turned toward her.
“What?”
Olivia pointed at the television.
“This wasn’t the first time.”
Vanessa’s head snapped toward her.
“Olivia.”
Olivia ignored her.
“She’s been trying to get Clara fired for weeks.”
Adrian frowned.
“What are you talking about?”
Vanessa stepped between them.
“She’s a teenager.”
Olivia raised her phone.
“And teenagers know how to record things.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
It was small.
Almost invisible.
But Adrian saw it.
Fear.
Olivia unlocked her phone.
“I have more.”
Vanessa moved toward her.
“Give me that phone.”
Adrian stepped between them.
“No.”
Vanessa stopped.
Adrian looked at Olivia.
“What else do you have?”
Olivia took a slow breath.
“Enough to prove today wasn’t some random accident.”
Vanessa stared at her.
“Olivia, think very carefully about what you’re doing.”
Olivia looked straight back at her.
“I already did.”
Then she pressed another video.
And Adrian heard Vanessa’s voice coming through the television speakers.
“If I can get Clara out of this house, everything goes back to the way it was.”
Adrian slowly turned toward his wife.
May you like
Vanessa stopped crying.
For the first time that afternoon, she looked exactly as frightened as she should have been.
