Chapter 8 - Kensington Strategic Holdings

Vanessa Kensington had never been rich.

That surprised everyone.

Her clothes were expensive.

Her apartment overlooked the river.

Her car cost more than most people's houses.

Her social media suggested vacations in Monaco, Aspen, Paris, and St. Barts.

But almost none of it belonged to her.

Kensington Strategic Holdings had been created eighteen months earlier.

On paper, Vanessa was its president.

In reality, the company was controlled through a network of trusts.

Lena spent two days tracing them.

The final trust led to a name Harrison knew immediately.

Charles Voss.

Pennsylvania developer.

Political donor.

Billionaire.

And one of the few men Harrison had publicly humiliated in court.

Five years earlier, Harrison had represented a group of families whose homes had been destroyed by a Voss construction project.

Harrison won.

The verdict cost Voss nearly $180 million.

Voss had smiled outside the courtroom and told reporters he respected the process.

Three days later, he privately told Harrison at a charity gala.

"Men like you eventually learn that winning has a price."

Harrison had ignored him.

Now he stared at the ownership documents on Lena's screen.

"Voss."

Lena nodded.

"Indirectly."

"How indirect?"

"Three trusts."

"Two LLCs."

"One Delaware corporation."

"But the money ends with him."

Harrison walked toward the window.

"Richard couldn't access Khloe's controlling shares."

"So Voss needed Khloe removed."

"Or incapacitated."

"Why Harrington Development?"

Lena opened another file.

"Because of the East Mercer project."

Harrison frowned.

Harrington Development owned eighty-three acres outside Philadelphia.

The property was worth hundreds of millions.

Khloe's father had refused to sell it for years.

Voss had wanted it for a massive private medical and commercial complex.

Khloe continued her father's refusal.

Richard supported her publicly.

Apparently not privately.

Lena showed him an email.

Richard to Charles Voss.

If Khloe's shares transfer, I can approve the Mercer sale immediately.

Voss replied.

Then solve your domestic problem.

Harrison read it again.

"This was nine months ago."

"Before Vanessa entered Richard's life publicly."

"Maybe before she entered it at all."

Lena nodded.

"We checked."

"Vanessa met Richard at a Voss Foundation gala ten months ago."

"So Voss introduced them."

"Looks that way."

Harrison's eyes narrowed.

"Vanessa wasn't just the mistress."

"She was leverage."

"Maybe."

Lena opened another message.

Vanessa to Voss.

He's easier than you said.

He thinks this is about us.

Harrison stared at the screen.

"So Richard thinks Vanessa loves him."

"Apparently."

"And Vanessa works for Voss."

"Apparently."

For the first time since the courthouse, Harrison felt something almost like satisfaction.

Not because the situation was good.

It was worse.

But because pieces finally fit.

Richard had betrayed Khloe for money and a woman.

Vanessa had betrayed Richard for Voss.

And Voss believed distance would protect him from everything below.

Harrison knew exactly how to attack structures like that.

You did not start at the top.

You removed one support at a time.

Then you let gravity do the rest.

At the hospital, Khloe finally held Eleanor for the first time.

Her daughter was wrapped in a white blanket against her chest.

Harrison sat nearby.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Khloe noticed his expression.

"You found something."

"Yes."

"How bad?"

"Charles Voss."

Khloe stopped rocking.

"What does he have to do with Richard?"

"Everything."

Harrison explained.

Khloe listened without interrupting.

When he finished, she looked down at Eleanor.

"My husband traded our family for a land deal."

"Maybe."

"No."

Her voice was firm.

"That's what he did."

Harrison waited.

Khloe looked up.

"Destroy the deal."

"I intend to."

"No, Harry."

She met his eyes.

"I don't care if the land loses value."

"I don't care if the company suffers."

"Whatever Richard promised Voss, make sure he never gets it."

Harrison nodded.

Then his phone buzzed.

It was the District Attorney.

May you like

Vanessa wanted to talk.

Without Richard.
