Chapter 19 - Sentencing Day

Vanessa was sentenced first.
She stood before the judge wearing no makeup.
Khloe attended.
She had debated staying home.
Eventually, she decided she needed to hear the end.
The prosecutor described the physical injuries.
The premature delivery.
The trauma.
Vanessa's cooperation was acknowledged.
So was the fact that without her testimony, several pieces of the conspiracy might have taken longer to prove.
Then the judge asked Khloe whether she wanted to speak.
She stood.
"My daughter was born eight weeks early because of what happened on those steps."
Vanessa began crying.
Khloe continued.
"For weeks, I listened to machines breathe around her."
"I wondered whether every problem she had would somehow be connected to one moment of anger."
"I hated you."
Vanessa lowered her head.
"Then I learned more."
"I learned how you were used."
"I learned how you used other people."
"And I learned something important."
"Understanding someone does not erase accountability."
Khloe looked directly at her.
"I don't need you to suffer forever."
"But I do need you to accept that what you did changed lives."
Vanessa nodded through tears.
"I do."
Khloe sat.
Vanessa received a substantial prison sentence, reduced because of cooperation.
Stephen Mercer received more.
Charles Voss received decades.
His businesses collapsed under civil judgments, investigations, and creditor actions.
Then came Richard.
The courtroom felt different.
Personal.
Richard stood before the judge.
His hair had gone gray near the temples.
He looked smaller.
The judge invited Khloe to speak.
This time she hesitated.
Then she approached the podium.
"Richard."
He looked at her.
"We were married for eleven years."
"I spent months trying to decide which version of our marriage was real."
"The man who brought me coffee in bed."
"The man who held my hand when my father died."
"The man who sat beside me when we learned I was pregnant."
"Or the man who stole from me."
"Cheated on me."
"Forged my name."
"And watched me fall."
Richard cried.
Khloe's voice remained steady.
"I finally understood they were all real."
"You were capable of kindness."
"You were also capable of betrayal."
"One doesn't erase the other."
Richard whispered.
"I'm sorry."
Khloe paused.
"I believe you."
Harrison looked at her.
So did Richard.
"But being sorry does not mean you get your life back."
Richard lowered his head.
"You don't get me back."
"You don't get the company back."
"And you don't get to rewrite what happened because remembering the truth hurts."
Khloe stepped away.
Richard received a lengthy prison sentence.
Because he cooperated, it was shorter than Voss's.
But it was long enough that Eleanor would be an adult before his earliest realistic release.
Outside court, Harrison walked beside Khloe.
"You surprised me."
"About what?"
"You told him you believed he was sorry."
"I do."
"Doesn't change anything."
"No."
Khloe looked at him.
"That's something I learned from you."
"What?"
"Forgiveness and access aren't the same thing."
Harrison smiled.
"I may have said that once."
"You said it repeatedly."
"I was probably right repeatedly."
"Don't ruin the moment."
They both laughed.
May you like
For the first time, the courthouse did not feel like the place where Khloe's life ended.
It felt like the place where one terrible part of it finally closed.
