Chapter 18 - The Deepfake

The video was fake.

But it was an excellent fake.

Khloe appeared to sit in her hospital room.

Her bruises were visible.

Her voice sounded perfect.

Richard stood near the window.

Video Khloe said.

Take the blame and I'll make sure you're comfortable.

Video Richard answered.

What about Voss?

Video Khloe smiled.

Leave Voss to Harrison.

The first twenty seconds looked devastating.

Then Harrison noticed the flowers.

A vase of lilies stood beside the hospital window.

Khloe had never had lilies in her room.

She was severely allergic.

Hospital records confirmed none had been permitted.

That was the first crack.

The second came from the monitor.

The heart rate on screen did not change naturally.

The numbers repeated in an identical sequence.

The third came from Khloe herself.

She watched the clip four times.

Then pointed.

"My wedding ring."

Harrison looked.

"What about it?"

"I'm wearing it on my right hand."

In reality, Khloe had worn it on her left until the day she filed for divorce.

The fake had mirrored an old image.

Digital forensic experts confirmed manipulation.

The video used footage from a hospital charity interview Khloe recorded two years earlier, combined with synthetic audio and manipulated imagery.

Federal prosecutors immediately moved to admit evidence of obstruction.

Investigators traced the creation to a media contractor paid through another Voss company.

The contractor cooperated within hours.

Charles Voss's comfortable expression disappeared the next morning.

Harrison watched from the gallery.

Khloe leaned toward him.

"Shark face."

"What?"

"You have it again."

He almost smiled.

The prosecution rested three days later.

Voss refused to testify.

Stephen Mercer did not testify either.

Closing arguments lasted nearly a full day.

The jury deliberated for eleven hours.

Khloe waited at home with Eleanor.

She refused to sit inside the courtroom waiting for twelve strangers to decide whether the nightmare had been real.

Harrison stayed with her.

At 6:42 p.m., his phone rang.

He listened.

Then looked at Khloe.

"They have a verdict."

They arrived at court twenty minutes later.

The jury entered.

Charles Voss stood.

Stephen Mercer stood.

Khloe sat behind the prosecution.

The clerk read the first count.

"Guilty."

Second.

"Guilty."

Third.

"Guilty."

The pattern continued.

Fraud.

Conspiracy.

Witness intimidation.

Obstruction.

Racketeering.

Stephen Mercer was convicted on multiple counts.

Charles Voss was convicted on nearly all major charges.

Khloe did not cheer.

She did not smile.

She simply breathed.

Outside, reporters crowded the courthouse.

Ironically, the same courthouse.

The same white staircase.

Khloe stopped at the bottom.

Harrison noticed.

"You okay?"

She looked up.

For a moment she could see herself falling again.

Vanessa's hands.

Richard's face.

The sky rotating above the steps.

Then Eleanor made a small sound in Harrison's arms.

Khloe looked at her daughter.

The memory released her.

"Yeah."

She nodded.

"I'm okay."

A reporter called.

"Mrs. Harrington, do you have a statement?"

Khloe turned.

"My name is Khloe Cole."

Harrison looked at her.

She had restored her maiden name that morning.

Khloe continued.

"What happened to me wasn't one bad decision."

"It was the end result of many people believing money gave them permission to ignore boundaries."

"They were wrong."

"That's all I have to say."

May you like

She walked away from the courthouse.

This time, on her own feet.
