Chapter 12 - THE HALE ARCHIVE

They did not break into the Hale estate.

Mason refused.

Instead, they began building enough evidence to obtain legal access.

The camera footage.

The checks.

The hospital record request.

The DNA result.

Olivia's letters.

Graham's appearance inside the apartment.

By midnight, Mason had contacted a federal prosecutor he trusted.

The prosecutor listened.

Then asked one question.

“Do you have evidence of interstate financial coercion?”

Mason looked at the checks.

“Yes.”

“Possible medical privacy violations?”

“Yes.”

“Potential witness intimidation?”

“Yes.”

“And a decades-old suspicious death?”

“Possibly.”

The prosecutor requested copies.

Mason sent them.

For the first time, law enforcement was officially involved.

Victoria still didn't know.

At least Ethan hoped she didn't.

The following morning, Olivia asked Ethan to bring Lucy closer.

Her condition had worsened again.

Lucy sat on the bed.

Olivia brushed hair from her daughter's face.

“You were very brave.”

Lucy shook her head.

“I was scared.”

“Brave people are scared.”

Olivia smiled weakly.

“They just go anyway.”

Lucy began crying.

“Don't talk like you're leaving.”

Olivia's smile trembled.

“I'm trying not to.”

Ethan stood near the window.

He had faced investors, layoffs, lawsuits, and funerals.

Nothing had prepared him to watch his daughter understand that her mother might die.

Olivia looked at Ethan.

“Come here.”

He sat beside them.

She placed Lucy's hand into his.

“Promise me.”

Ethan knew what she meant.

“No.”

Olivia blinked.

“No?”

“I'm not making a goodbye promise while you're still here.”

A faint laugh escaped her.

“You were always stubborn.”

“So were you.”

“Ethan.”

He looked at her.

“Fine.”

His voice broke.

“I promise Lucy will never be alone.”

Olivia squeezed their hands.

“And don't hate yourself.”

“That promise I can't make.”

“Try.”

“I lost eleven years.”

“So did I.”

She looked at him.

“We can't give Lucy those years back by spending the next eleven angry.”

Ethan lowered his eyes.

“You deserved better.”

“So did you.”

A nurse entered.

Olivia needed rest.

Ethan and Lucy walked into the hallway.

Robert was waiting.

He had not slept.

Lucy looked at him.

For several seconds, neither spoke.

Then Robert said.

“I owe you an apology I don't deserve to have accepted.”

Lucy crossed her arms.

“Then why say it?”

Robert almost smiled sadly.

“Because you deserve to hear it.”

She waited.

“I helped keep your father away.”

“Yes.”

“I frightened your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I cared more about protecting myself than protecting you.”

Lucy stared at him.

“Yes.”

Robert's eyes filled.

“I am sorry.”

Lucy did not forgive him.

She simply said.

“Okay.”

Then she walked away.

Robert looked at Ethan.

“She is more honest than every adult in this family.”

Ethan didn't disagree.

Mason approached from the elevator.

“We have a warrant.”

Ethan straightened.

“For the Hale estate?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Now.”

Federal agents were already assembling.

Robert looked at Ethan.

“I should go.”

“No.”

“Ethan.”

“You've spent eleven years hiding.”

Ethan met his father's eyes.

“You're going to watch the truth come out.”

Two hours later, black federal vehicles turned through the iron gates of the old Hale estate.

The stone mansion stood beneath gray clouds.

Agents entered first.

Graham Hale was not there.

Neither was Victoria.

The archive, however, was exactly where Robert said it would be.

Behind a false wine cellar wall.

A steel door.

Biometric lock.

Agents forced it open.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Audio recordings.

Financial records.

Mason stared at the shelves.

“This man kept everything.”

Ethan moved slowly between boxes.

Then one label stopped him.

PIERCE, ELIZABETH.

His mother's name.

Beside it sat another box.

BENNETT, OLIVIA.

And beneath both.

PIERCE, LUCY.

Ethan reached for the box with his daughter's name.

An agent stopped him.

“We need to document it first.”

Ethan stepped back.

The lid was opened.

Inside sat copies of school reports.

Medical records.

Photographs taken from cars.

Pictures of Lucy entering playgrounds, libraries, grocery stores.

Eleven years of surveillance.

Then the agent lifted one final folder.

It contained a typed document.

PETITION FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODY.

Petitioner.

Victoria Hale.

The filing date was three days away.

Victoria hadn't merely intended to marry Ethan.

She had planned to take Lucy after Olivia died.
