Chapter 1 - THE GIRL IN THE AISLE

The bouquet hit the chapel floor.
White roses scattered across the red runner while Victoria twisted against Ethan's grip.
“Give me those papers.”
Her voice was no longer the polished voice she had used through months of wedding planning.
It was sharp.
Desperate.
Afraid.
Ethan tightened his fingers around her wrist just enough to stop her from reaching Lucy.
“Don't touch her.”
A hundred guests had gone silent.
Even the organist had lifted her hands from the keys.
Lucy stood behind Ethan, trembling inside her rain-soaked sweatshirt.
The envelope was still open in her hands.
Several checks had slipped onto the carpet.
Victoria stared at them as if they were loaded weapons.
“Ethan, you don't understand.”
He looked at her.
“I understand your signature.”
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But Ethan saw it.
For nearly three years he had believed Victoria was the woman who had rescued him from the darkest part of his life.
She had been patient when he refused to discuss Olivia.
She had listened when he spoke about the child he believed wasn't his.
She had even encouraged him to forgive himself for not fighting harder to find Olivia after she disappeared.
Now the woman standing in front of him had been paying Olivia for years.
Ethan released Victoria's wrist and picked up another check.
Twenty-five thousand dollars.
Another.
Ten thousand.
Another.
Fifty thousand.
Every payment came from a private account connected to Hale Holdings.
Every payment carried Victoria's signature.
Lucy touched Ethan's sleeve.
“Please.”
He turned.
Rainwater ran from her hair onto her cheeks like tears.
“My mom doesn't have much time.”
Those words cut through everything else.
Ethan looked at the photograph again.
Olivia stood beside him twelve years earlier, one hand resting over a visibly pregnant stomach.
He remembered that afternoon.
He remembered the small café.
He remembered Olivia refusing to meet his eyes.
Two days later, she had told him the baby belonged to someone else.
A week after that, she disappeared.
He had searched.
Called.
Begged mutual friends for information.
Then came a short handwritten letter telling him never to contact her again.
Eventually, he forced himself to believe her.
Now an eleven-year-old girl was standing in front of him with Olivia's eyes.
Ethan looked at Lucy carefully.
The shape of her nose.
The small dimple in her left cheek.
The way one eyebrow lifted higher when she was frightened.
His mother had the same eyebrow.
A strange pressure filled his chest.
“Where is Olivia?”
“St. Matthew's Hospital.”
Lucy swallowed.
“They said she might not make it through the night.”
Ethan turned immediately toward the chapel doors.
Victoria stepped in front of him.
“You cannot leave.”
He stared at her.
She lowered her voice.
“Think about what you're doing.”
“I am.”
“Our families are here.”
“I don't care.”
“The press is outside.”
“I don't care.”
Victoria glanced toward the guests.
Then she whispered.
“That girl could be lying.”
Lucy flinched.
Ethan saw it.
Something inside him hardened.
“She came through a storm carrying checks with your signature.”
“Documents can be forged.”
“Then you'll have no problem explaining them to the police.”
Victoria went pale.
That was the answer Ethan needed.
His father rose from the front pew.
“Ethan.”
Ethan looked toward him.
Robert Pierce was seventy-one and rarely showed emotion in public.
Now his face had lost all color.
He was staring at Lucy.
Not Victoria.
Lucy.
Robert slowly stepped into the aisle.
“Turn around, sweetheart.”
Lucy looked confused.
“What?”
“Just for a second.”
Ethan almost stopped him.
Then Lucy turned.
Robert stared at the back of her neck.
There, beneath her wet hair, was a small crescent-shaped birthmark.
Robert gripped the pew beside him.
“Ethan.”
“What?”
“You had that exact mark when you were born.”
Victoria backed away.
Ethan felt the entire room tilt.
Lucy turned around again.
“I don't know what that means.”
Ethan did.
Or at least he was beginning to.
He took off his suit jacket and placed it over Lucy's shoulders.
“Come with me.”
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“Ethan, if you walk out that door, this wedding is over.”
He looked at the woman he had almost married.
Then he looked at the frightened child beside him.
“The wedding ended when those doors opened.”
He removed Victoria's engagement ring from the small ceremonial tray beside the altar.
He placed it in her palm.
Then he closed her fingers around it.
“Whatever you did to Olivia, we're going to find out.”
Victoria's expression became completely still.
For the first time, Ethan saw something behind her beauty that he had never recognized before.
Calculation.
Coldness.
And something even worse.
Relief.
As if the truth finally being exposed meant she no longer had to pretend.
Ethan took Lucy's hand.
Together they walked through the ruined wedding and into the rain.
Behind them, Victoria Hale didn't cry.

She simply pulled out her phone.
And made a call.
