Chapter 11 - THE RED BOX

The revelation changed everything.

Victoria had been frightening enough.

Graham Hale was more dangerous.

He had spent forty years building companies, buying political influence, and surviving scandals that destroyed other men.

Ethan remembered him as charming.

Generous.

Always smiling.

Now he watched Graham on the recording stealing evidence from a dying woman's bedroom.

“What was in that box?”

Ethan asked Olivia.

She looked terrified.

“I hoped he didn't know about it.”

“What was inside?”

“A recording.”

“Of who?”

“Robert.”

Everyone looked at Ethan's father.

Robert slowly sat down.

Olivia continued.

“And Graham.”

Robert's face emptied.

“When?”

“Eleven years ago.”

Robert whispered.

“That night.”

Olivia nodded.

Ethan stepped closer.

“What night?”

Olivia looked between them.

“The night after Lucy was born.”

She had been in a private maternity room.

Robert and Graham arrived after midnight.

Victoria stayed outside.

Olivia had already learned to be afraid.

So she activated a small recorder inside her purse.

“They argued.”

“About what?”

“Me.”

Robert closed his eyes.

“And Lucy.”

Olivia continued.

“Graham wanted Robert to force me to surrender custody.”

Lucy stared at her mother.

“What?”

Olivia reached for her.

“I never would have.”

Ethan looked at Robert.

“You knew?”

Robert nodded.

“I refused.”

It was possibly the first decent thing Ethan had heard his father did.

“What did Graham say?”

Robert answered.

“He said a child connected to you would make Victoria's future impossible.”

“Why?”

“Because Graham wanted the companies joined through marriage.”

Ethan laughed bitterly.

“So this was business.”

“It was always business to him.”

Olivia shook her head.

“Not all of it.”

Ethan looked at her.

“What else?”

“The recording contained something about you.”

“What?”

“I never understood it.”

Robert went still.

Olivia continued.

“Graham said, ‘If Ethan ever learns why Elizabeth died, you lose everything.’”

Ethan froze.

Elizabeth Pierce.

His mother.

She had died when Ethan was nineteen.

A car accident.

At least that was what he had always been told.

Ethan slowly turned toward Robert.

“What was Graham talking about?”

Robert looked broken.

“Not now.”

Ethan stepped closer.

“Now.”

“Ethan.”

“My mother died in an accident.”

Robert said nothing.

“Didn't she?”

Lucy watched them.

Olivia reached for Ethan's hand.

He barely felt it.

Robert finally spoke.

“Your mother discovered the fraud.”

Ethan couldn't move.

“What fraud?”

“The offshore accounts.”

“You said those happened after she died.”

“I lied.”

The words hit harder than Ethan expected.

“She found out?”

“Yes.”

“What happened?”

“She threatened to report me.”

Ethan's voice became almost inaudible.

“And?”

“Graham came to the house.”

Robert's eyes filled with tears.

“They argued.”

“My mother and Graham?”

“Yes.”

“What happened afterward?”

Robert looked away.

“Elizabeth drove away.”

“And crashed.”

“Yes.”

“Was Graham involved?”

“I don't know.”

“You don't know?”

“He followed her.”

The hospital room disappeared around Ethan.

“You let me believe she lost control on a wet road.”

“I believed that too.”

“Until when?”

Robert swallowed.

“Until Graham told me years later that I should be grateful he had solved my biggest problem.”

Ethan lunged forward.

Mason caught his arm before he reached Robert.

“Ethan.”

“You knew.”

“I suspected.”

“You knew.”

“I couldn't prove it.”

“You still worked with him.”

Robert began crying.

“I was a coward.”

Ethan shoved Mason's arm away but did not touch his father.

Lucy had never seen him this angry.

That stopped him.

He backed away.

The missing red box was no longer only evidence about Lucy.

It might contain information about his mother's death.

Mason spoke quietly.

“If Graham took it, he probably hasn't destroyed it.”

“Why not?”

“Men like that don't destroy leverage.”

Ethan understood.

They collected it.

Stored it.

Used it.

Mason closed the laptop.

“We need to find where Graham keeps his insurance.”

Robert looked up.

“I know where.”

Everyone turned toward him.

“The old Hale estate.”

Mason frowned.

“The one outside Richmond?”

Robert nodded.

“Graham has a private archive beneath the house.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

May you like

“How do you know?”

“Because twenty years ago, I watched him put my confession in it.”
