Chapter 17 - THE BROTHER GRANT ERASED

Ryan had received an envelope eight months earlier.

Inside was Ellie’s photograph.

A copy of the DNA test.

And one sentence.

SHE IS YOUR DAUGHTER.

He believed it was blackmail.

Then Evelyn called.

She told him he could have a relationship with Ellie if he cooperated.

“What did she want?”

I asked.

“For me to challenge paternity.”

“Why didn’t you?”

Ryan looked at Grant.

“Because whatever happened in a laboratory, Grant is her father.”

Grant’s face changed.

Ryan continued.

“I donated genetic material before chemotherapy.”

“I never authorized its use for anyone.”

“Evelyn arranged the substitution years later.”

“How?”

“I don’t know.”

Helen did.

Bribery.

The clinic’s former lab director had received payments from a Shaw-controlled company.

We had the transaction records inside Bluebird.

The conspiracy now involved reproductive fraud.

Identity fraud.

Financial fraud.

Custody manipulation.

Potential kidnapping.

And decades of stolen assets.

Evelyn had built the entire scheme around controlling bloodlines.

I looked at Ryan.

“Why did you disappear?”

He sat.

“Because I discovered Dad was lying.”

“About Kingsley?”

“About everything.”

Ryan had confronted Richard shortly before his death.

Richard admitted Evelyn had recruited him.

He suspected she was stealing money.

He wanted out.

Ryan urged him to go to federal authorities.

Then Richard had the cardiac event.

“Did you believe Evelyn caused it?”

“Yes.”

“Can you prove it?”

“No.”

Grant spoke quietly.

“You never told me.”

“You were twenty-four and worshiped Dad.”

“You could have tried.”

“I did.”

Grant stared at him.

Ryan’s expression softened.

“You told me Evelyn said I was jealous because Dad trusted you with the family legacy.”

Grant looked away.

The manipulation had been everywhere.

Brother against brother.

Mercer against Kingsley.

Husband against wife.

Everyone isolated enough to be useful.

Helen received another message from the court.

Evelyn’s emergency paternity petition would be heard the next morning.

We had one night to prepare.

Ryan agreed to submit a DNA test and affidavit.

The result confirmed the truth.

He was Ellie’s biological father.

Grant sat alone after reading it.

I found him in my father’s office.

“You okay?”

He laughed bitterly.

“Do I get to be?”

“You are still her father.”

“Biology says otherwise.”

“Biology says Ryan provided DNA.”

I looked at him.

“Fatherhood says you held her when she had pneumonia.”

“You taught her to ride that ridiculous pink scooter.”

“You slept on the floor beside her crib when she had nightmares.”

Grant’s eyes filled.

“After everything I did, why are you telling me this?”

“Because Ellie’s relationship with you belongs to Ellie.”

“Not to my anger.”

He covered his face.

“I don’t deserve you.”

“This isn’t about me.”

“I know.”

That was the first time I believed he truly understood.

At the hearing, Evelyn appeared by video through her attorney.

She claimed concern for Ellie’s inheritance rights.

Helen dismantled that argument in twenty minutes.

Ryan testified.

The clinic records were submitted.

The DNA results were verified.

Then the judge asked Grant a simple question.

“Mr. Mercer, knowing you are not the child’s biological father, do you continue to claim legal parentage?”

Grant looked at Ellie’s photograph on the evidence table.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

His voice broke.

“Because I am her father.”

The courtroom went silent.

The judge preserved Grant’s legal parentage pending full review.

Evelyn’s request to suspend Ellie’s beneficiary status was denied.

But as the judge finished speaking, federal agents entered the courtroom.

They approached Helen.

One whispered something.

Helen turned toward me.

“They found Evelyn.”

“Where?”

“At your father’s cemetery.”

My stomach tightened.

“Why?”

Helen’s expression changed.

“She wasn’t alone.”

“Who was with her?”

“Ellie.”

For one second, my mind refused to understand the sentence.

Then I turned toward the back of the courtroom.

The Kingsley nanny who had brought Ellie that morning was gone.
