Chapter 1 - THE CALL THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING

The first account froze before Grant could finish asking what I had done.

His phone rang again.

Then again.

Each vibration seemed louder than the last in the marble hotel lobby.

Ellie shifted against my shoulder but did not wake.

Grant stared at the black satellite phone in my hand as though it were a weapon.

In a way, it was.

Not because of what the phone could do.

Because of who was authorized to answer it.

“Mara, listen to me.”

Grant released the blonde woman’s hand and moved toward me.

I stepped back.

“Don’t.”

One word stopped him.

For the first time in eleven years of marriage, Grant Mercer actually obeyed me.

The blonde woman looked between us.

Her confidence was disappearing quickly.

“Grant, what is happening?”

He ignored her.

That told me more than anything else could have.

The hotel manager approached cautiously from across the lobby.

His tablet was still glowing with a red warning banner.

“Mr. Mercer.”

Grant turned sharply.

“What?”

The manager swallowed.

“I’ve been instructed to deactivate your executive privileges at all Kingsley properties immediately.”

Grant’s expression changed.

“What executive privileges?”

“Your corporate suite access, transportation authorization, dining account, private club access, and security clearance.”

The blonde woman pulled her hand away from him.

Grant noticed.

So did I.

“You can’t do that.”

The manager looked uncomfortable.

“I’m afraid it has already been done.”

Grant looked back at me.

I adjusted Ellie carefully in my arms.

She smelled like strawberry shampoo and the vanilla cookies she had eaten in the car.

Her little cheek rested against my shoulder.

She had no idea that her father had apparently spent months preparing to take her away from me.

That thought turned my fear into something colder.

Something useful.

I looked at Grant.

“Who is she?”

He blinked.

“What?”

“The woman.”

The blonde’s jaw tightened.

“My name is Celeste.”

I looked at her.

“Last name?”

Grant spoke immediately.

“That’s enough.”

That was interesting.

Celeste gave him a confused look.

I repeated the question.

“Your last name.”

She lifted her chin.

“Voss.”

My stomach turned.

I knew the name.

Not because Grant had ever mentioned her.

Because I had seen it once before.

Years earlier.

Inside my father’s study.

On a file labeled BLUEBIRD.

I had been twenty-six years old when I found the folder.

My father walked into the room before I could read more than three pages.

He took it from me without anger.

Then he locked it inside the safe behind his desk.

“What is Bluebird?” I had asked.

His expression became strangely distant.

“Something I hope you never need to know.”

I had forgotten the conversation.

Until now.

Celeste Voss.

The same surname printed beside a transfer request in my father’s file.

I felt my pulse quicken.

Grant was watching my face.

He knew I recognized the name.

That frightened me more than his affair.

I opened the satellite phone again.

Grant moved toward me.

“Mara, don’t.”

I pressed another encrypted contact.

My father’s former chief counsel answered.

“Mrs. Mercer?”

“Arthur.”

There was silence.

He had known me since childhood.

Only Kingsley family members and three senior trustees had that number.

“What happened?”

I stared at Grant.

“I need the Bluebird file.”

Arthur did not respond immediately.

Then his voice changed completely.

“Where are you?”

“The Grand Halcyon.”

“With Ellie?”

“Yes.”

“Do not go home.”

Grant’s face lost its color.

I tightened my grip on the phone.

“Why?”

Arthur spoke carefully.

“Because someone accessed the Bluebird archive forty-eight hours ago.”

My mouth went dry.

“Who?”

Another pause.

Then he said the words that changed everything.

“Grant Mercer.”

I looked at my husband.

He was already backing toward the elevators.

“Security.”

My voice carried across the lobby.

Two hotel officers appeared almost immediately.

Grant turned.

“Mara, don’t do this.”

I kissed the top of Ellie’s head.

“You already did.”

The security officers blocked the elevator.

Celeste moved away from Grant.

Arthur continued speaking through the phone.

“There’s more.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

“How much more?”

“The custody petition was only the beginning.”

My hand tightened around the phone.

“What else did he file?”

“He filed nothing.”

Arthur’s answer was almost worse.

“He was waiting.”

“For what?”

“For Ellie’s fourth birthday.”

I looked down at my sleeping daughter.

Her birthday was seventeen days away.

Arthur lowered his voice.

“According to the Bluebird trust provisions, something happens when Ellie turns four.”

I could barely hear myself speak.

“What happens?”

“She receives control of an asset Grant has spent years trying to reach.”

Grant looked at me from across the lobby.

And suddenly I understood.

His affair had humiliated me.

His betrayal had broken my marriage.

But neither of those things was the real danger.

The real danger was sleeping peacefully in my arms.

And someone had seventeen days left to get to her.
