Chapter 10 - THE RABBIT

Ellie’s stuffed rabbit was named Mr. Button.
My father gave it to her the week before he died.
Grant had repaired the rabbit twice.
The second repair happened three months earlier.
The exact time Celeste said he discovered the hidden appendix.
I went to Ellie’s room inside the penthouse.
She was asleep.
Mr. Button rested beneath her arm.
I stood beside the bed staring at him.
A ridiculous stuffed rabbit suddenly carried the weight of billions.
Arthur brought a forensic technician.
We waited until Ellie woke naturally.
I told her Mr. Button needed a quick checkup.
She reluctantly surrendered him.
Inside the lining, beneath a carefully restitched seam, we found a microSD card.
Grant had put it there.
That fact complicated everything.
The card was encrypted.
Arthur’s team opened it after two hours.
The first file contained Grant’s voice.
Mara,
If you are hearing this, then I failed to stop Evelyn quietly.
I sat down.
The recording continued.
I know what you think of me.
Most of it is deserved.
I approached you because Evelyn told me your family destroyed mine.
I married you with an agenda.
I should have told you.
I did not.
There were no excuses.
Only reasons.
None of them would repair what I did.
I closed my eyes.
Grant’s voice sounded exhausted.
Then Ellie was born.
Everything changed.
Evelyn wanted me to begin the guardianship plan immediately.
I refused.
She threatened Vivian.
She threatened Celeste’s father.
Then she showed me documents suggesting you planned to remove me from Ellie’s life.
I believed them.
Some were fake.
I discovered that too late.
The custody file began as leverage.
I thought if I had evidence against you, Evelyn could not control me by threatening to destroy my relationship with Ellie.
Then Vivian planted the medication.
That was not my order.
I confronted her.
She told me Evelyn demanded it.
Arthur paused the recording.
“What?”
I looked at him.
“Keep going.”
Grant’s voice resumed.
The real Bluebird asset is not money.
It is testimony.
Bank records.
Trustee recordings.
Contracts.
Enough to prove Evelyn Shaw ran the original conspiracy.
She stole money from Kingsley and framed Peter Voss.
She also manipulated Richard Mercer into believing your father was responsible.
My father died hating a man who had actually tried to protect him.
Peter spent twenty years trying to recover money that Evelyn had stolen from him.
Grant coughed.
The recording sounded recent.
Your father created Bluebird as a trap.
When Ellie turns four, control of the evidence archive transfers to an independent trustee.
No family member can suppress it.
That is what Evelyn is trying to stop.
I looked at Arthur.
“What happens if guardianship changes before four?”
Arthur searched the files.
Grant answered in the recording.
Evelyn believes that if you are declared unfit and I become sole guardian, she can force me to authorize destruction of the archive before the transfer date.
She is wrong.
Your father built a second trigger.
If anyone attempts to alter Ellie’s guardianship through fraud, the archive releases automatically.
Arthur stared at me.
“That’s why your father included the fraud clause.”
Grant continued.
If Evelyn learns we know this, she will stop trying to win in court.
She will remove the beneficiary.
My blood went cold.
Remove the beneficiary.
Ellie.
The recording ended with one sentence.
Do not trust anyone who tells you Ellie’s birthday is the deadline.
The real deadline is September second.
I looked at the calendar.
September second was four days away.
Arthur opened another file on the card.
It contained a corporate schedule.
September second.
Kingsley annual trustee certification.
If Ellie was alive and legally recognized as beneficiary on that date, the archive became irreversible.
We had four days.
Not seventeen.
Helen’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her face changed.
“What happened?”
She looked at me.
“Grant was just arrested.”
“For what?”
“Attempted kidnapping.”
I stood.
“Who?”
May you like
Helen swallowed.
“Ellie.”
