Chapter 3 - THE BAG IN THE WALL

By sunrise, the mountain retreat had become a controlled scene.

Diego had not been formally arrested.

Not yet.

But deputies had separated him from Brenna and taken statements from both.

Alvin's private attorney, Claire Whitmore, arrived at the hospital shortly after two in the morning.

She was fifty-four, precise, and almost impossible to intimidate.

Elena had known her since childhood.

Claire placed a legal pad beside the bed.

“I need you to tell me exactly what was in those papers.”

Elena described every clause she remembered.

Transfer of voting shares.

Property management authority.

A newly created holding company.

A waiver Elena had initially thought was routine.

Claire's expression hardened.

“Did you sign anything?”

“No.”

“Initial anything?”

“No.”

“Did Diego have access to examples of your signature?”

Elena laughed weakly.

“He's my husband.”

Claire did not laugh.

“That means yes.”

Alvin stood near the window.

“What company?”

Elena searched her memory.

“North Crown.”

Claire looked at Alvin.

He already knew the name.

Elena saw it.

“You've heard of it.”

Alvin turned around slowly.

“North Crown Holdings filed incorporation documents four months ago.”

“How do you know?”

“I had someone look into Diego's recent business activity.”

Elena stared at him.

“You investigated my husband?”

“I had concerns.”

“And you didn't tell me?”

“You were pregnant.”

“That is not an answer.”

“No.”

His voice softened.

“It isn't.”

Claire interrupted before the argument could grow.

“We can deal with that later.”

“Right now, North Crown matters.”

She opened her laptop.

“The registered manager is Marisol Vega.”

Elena's throat tightened.

She knew the name.

Not because Diego had ever introduced them.

Because she had seen it on a restaurant receipt hidden inside his jacket.

Marisol.

Two dinners in Aspen.

One hotel charge in Denver.

A jewelry purchase Diego had called a corporate gift.

“She is the woman.”

Alvin looked at her.

“What woman?”

“The one I think he's sleeping with.”

Silence settled over the room.

Claire typed something.

“Then this gets worse.”

She rotated the screen.

North Crown Holdings had recently received an option to purchase a parcel of land beside one of Sterling Development's most valuable future projects.

The option price was absurdly low.

Elena frowned.

“Who approved that?”

Claire looked at Alvin.

“No one should have.”

Alvin stepped closer.

“Show me.”

The electronic signature approving the option belonged to Elena.

Her full legal name appeared beneath it.

Elena felt nauseated.

“I never signed that.”

Claire nodded.

“I believe you.”

Alvin's jaw tightened.

“If this is connected to her Sterling shares, Diego has already started moving assets.”

Meanwhile, at the retreat, a forensic technician examined the mudroom cabinet.

Nothing appeared unusual.

Then he noticed fresh scratches on the rear trim.

He removed two screws.

The back panel loosened.

Behind it was a narrow maintenance cavity running between the wall studs.

Inside lay Elena's handbag.

Deputy Mason pulled it out carefully.

The legal documents were still inside.

But one page was missing.

Page fourteen.

At the hospital, Claire received the call.

She listened silently.

“Ask them to photograph every page before touching anything else.”

She ended the call.

“They found your bag.”

Elena exhaled.

“And the papers?”

“One page is missing.”

“Which page?”

“Fourteen.”

Elena tried to remember.

“I don't know.”

Claire did.

She had already obtained a draft copy from corporate records.

Her eyes moved to Alvin.

“Page fourteen is the beneficiary schedule.”

“What does that mean?”

Claire turned the laptop around.

The provision stated that if Elena died, became permanently incapacitated, or was declared medically unable to manage her affairs, control of several transferred assets would pass to a temporary trustee.

That trustee was Diego.

Elena stared at the words.

Her baby kicked.

Nobody spoke.

Finally, Elena whispered.

“He put that in the papers before taking me outside.”

May you like

Claire nodded.

“And page fourteen is the only page someone tried to make disappear.”
