Chapter 13 - ALVIN'S SECRET
Before Elena was born, Sterling Development nearly collapsed.
Alvin had trusted the wrong partners.
Victor Keane had helped save the company.
That was the story everyone knew.
The truth was uglier.
Victor had not simply saved Sterling.
He had purchased distressed debt through hidden entities and used it to gain leverage over Alvin.
Years later, Alvin discovered the arrangement.
By then, Victor had become his closest partner.
Removing him would have threatened the company.
So Alvin created protections.
Trusts.
Voting restrictions.
Succession plans.
The most important file was created when Elena was born.
“The birth file.”
Elena stared at her father.
“You named a corporate document after my birth?”
“It was an internal nickname.”
“What is inside it?”
“Original ownership records.”
“Proof that Victor concealed his interest in several entities.”
“Proof that some of his shares may have been acquired through fraud.”
Elena felt anger rising.
“You had proof for almost thirty years?”
“Not enough proof for court.”
“But enough to destroy him publicly?”
“Possibly.”
“Where is it?”
Alvin looked away.
“I don't know.”
Elena laughed once in disbelief.
“You lost it?”
“It disappeared from corporate archives eighteen years ago.”
“And you think Victor has spent all this time looking for it?”
“I think he believed I moved it into one of your trusts.”
“Did you?”
“No.”
Elena stared at him.
“Then why does he think Marisol gave it to me?”
“Because someone is feeding him bad information.”
Claire, who had been listening, leaned forward.
“Or someone wants Victor to believe Elena has evidence she does not have.”
The possibility changed everything.
Victor's desperation might not be about recovering a real file.
Someone might be directing him.
The handwriting report on Diego's notebook arrived that afternoon.
Most entries were Diego's.
The line “If heart event, natural complication” was not.
It belonged to Brenna.
Elena sat very still.
Brenna had written the darkest line.
Not Victor.
Not Diego.
Brenna.
Claire immediately requested another interview.
This time, Brenna arrived without bargaining.
She looked exhausted.
When Claire placed the notebook page in front of her, Brenna began crying.
“I didn't mean Elena.”
Elena stared through the observation window.
Claire asked, “Then who did you mean?”
Brenna shook her head.
“I was talking about Alvin.”
Elena's blood ran cold.
The financial conspiracy had another target.
Her father.
Brenna explained.
Victor believed Alvin's heart condition could be exploited.
Elena frowned when Claire later repeated that statement.
“My father doesn't have a heart condition.”
Exactly.
Someone had given Victor a false medical file showing Alvin had a serious cardiac problem.
The file suggested certain medications could trigger a fatal event.
Victor had discussed using stress, medication, and a staged emergency.
Brenna wrote the note after one of those conversations.
Elena felt sick.
“So they were planning to take the company from both of us.”
Claire nodded.
“And when your pregnancy changed the trust timeline, they accelerated the plan against you first.”
Elena looked toward Alvin's study.
For years, she had believed wealth protected their family.
Now she understood the opposite could be true.
Their fortune had built the target around them.
Then Aaron called.
He had identified the person who created Alvin's false medical file.
