Chapter 10 - THE UNBORN HEIR

Claire moved so quickly that Brenna barely had time to react.
She placed one hand over the flash drive.
“You are not leaving with this.”
Brenna pulled back.
“You cannot take my property.”
Claire looked toward the security officers.
“I can have investigators obtain a warrant before you reach the elevator.”
Brenna slowly released the drive.
Elena's heart was pounding.
“What do you mean Victor planned to sacrifice my daughter?”
Brenna looked at the floor.
“The trust changes when the baby is born.”
Alvin had created a generation-skipping provision years earlier.
If Elena had a child, part of her voting interest would eventually pass into a protected trust for that child.
A trustee chosen by Alvin would oversee it until adulthood.
That trustee could never be Diego.
Victor knew that.
Once the baby was born, his opportunity to consolidate control became far more difficult.
“That is why everything happened now.”
Claire spoke the words quietly.
Brenna nodded.
“Victor said there was a window.”
Elena felt cold again.
“A window before my child existed legally as a beneficiary.”
Brenna looked ashamed.
“Yes.”
“So if I had died before giving birth?”
“Diego could have controlled your existing shares under the documents.”
“And Victor would control Diego.”
Brenna said nothing.
Elena closed her eyes.
The room seemed to tilt.
Everything had been timed.
The legal documents.
The pressure.
The surveillance.
Even the pregnancy.
Not caused.
But exploited.
Claire handed the flash drive to an investigator.
Its contents were copied without connecting it to the hospital network.
There were seventeen audio files.
Most involved Victor.
One involved Diego.
One involved Brenna.
The most disturbing file was recorded six weeks earlier.
Victor's voice came first.
“Elena doesn't need to die.”
Diego responded.
“Then stop talking like she does.”
“She only needs to be unavailable long enough for the emergency provision to activate.”
“What does unavailable mean?”
“Hospitalized.”
“Sedated.”
“Psychiatric hold.”
“I don't care.”
Then Brenna's voice.
“No permanent harm.”
Victor laughed.
“Of course not.”
The recording ended there.
Elena listened twice.
Diego had objected to the word die.
For one brief, terrible second, part of her wanted to believe that mattered.
Then she remembered him standing over her under the freezing water.
Maybe he had not planned to kill her.
But when the moment came, he had chosen control over compassion.
That was enough.
Another recording revealed Victor discussing a payment to Dr. Keller.
Another described manipulating a board vote.
Then came a file dated only four days earlier.
Victor spoke with an unidentified man.
“If Navarro fails, we cut him loose.”
“And the wife?”
“Depends on what she knows.”
“And the child?”
Victor paused.
“The child changes the trust.”
“So?”
“So no child means no complication.”
The recording ended.
Alvin listened later that night.
He removed his glasses.
Elena had never seen murder in her father's eyes before.
Claire saw it too.
“Alvin.”
He looked at her.
“You do nothing.”
“I know.”
“No.”
Claire leaned closer.
“You listen carefully.”
“You do nothing except what the law allows.”
Alvin looked toward his daughter.
Then toward the fetal monitor.
Finally, he nodded.
But the danger was no longer theoretical.

Victor Keane knew the conspiracy was collapsing.
And somewhere outside the hospital, he was still free.
