Chapter 19 - The Aranda Empire Breaks Open

News of Esther's arrest became public within forty-eight hours.
The headlines were brutal.
ARANDA MATRIARCH INVESTIGATED IN DECADES-LONG POISONING CASE.
BILLIONAIRE FAMILY TRUST LINKED TO ATTEMPTED HARM OF PREGNANT HEIR.
OLD DEATHS REOPENED.
Reporters surrounded the mansion.
Aranda Group shares dropped sharply.
Board members demanded answers.
Alejandro gave them one.
At an emergency meeting, he entered carrying his father's trust documents.
"I am temporarily stepping aside from executive operations."
The room erupted.
Alejandro raised one hand.
"Not because my mother ordered it."
"Not because the press wants blood."
"Because for years this company has been structured around a family culture that protected secrecy over accountability."
Several older directors shifted uncomfortably.
Alejandro continued.
"My father tried to change that."
"He died before he could."
"I will finish what he started."
He announced an independent audit.
The Aranda Foundation would be separated from family control.
Medical charities connected to Esther would be investigated.
All internal security reporting would move to an independent board committee.
Then Alejandro did something Esther had spent thirty years preventing.
He publicly acknowledged Lucia Marquez as his biological mother.
"I was raised believing Esther Aranda gave birth to me."
"That was false."
"My biological mother was Lucia Marquez."
"She died when I was an infant under circumstances now being investigated."
Cameras flashed.
Alejandro's voice remained steady.
"I will not protect my family's reputation by continuing a lie."
That afternoon, he visited Elena.
He told her about Eduardo's trust.
She cried for several minutes.
"I don't want the money."
Alejandro sat opposite her.
"It was meant for you."
"It was meant to erase guilt."
"Maybe."
"But it also belonged to your family."
Elena looked at him.
"You are my family."
The words nearly broke him.
For most of his life, family had meant stone gates.
Portraits.
Board seats.
Names carved into buildings.
Now an elderly woman in a modest home had spoken the word more honestly than anyone in the mansion ever had.
Meanwhile, Valeria improved.
Her blood levels slowly normalized.
The baby remained inside her.
Each additional day became a victory.
Esther was held without bail.
Prosecutors reopened the deaths of Lucia and Eduardo.
Dr. Velasco agreed to testify.
Beatriz Salas gave a sworn statement.
Teresa turned over the original video.
Marcela accepted responsibility for destroying evidence and cooperating in the false affair narrative.
Her lawyers negotiated.
Alejandro did not intervene.
One evening, he sat beside Valeria while rain touched the hospital windows.
"Do you hate her?"
Valeria asked.
"Esther?"
"Yes."
Alejandro thought for a long time.
"I don't know."
"I hate what she did."
"I hate what she made everyone become around her."
"But part of me still remembers the woman who sat beside my bed when I had pneumonia at nine."
Valeria nodded.
"People can do terrible things and still exist inside memories where they were kind."
"That's what makes it harder."
Alejandro looked at her.
"When did you become wiser than me?"
"The third day I refused to get out of bed."
He laughed.
She smiled.
Then suddenly her expression changed.
Her hand moved to her stomach.
Alejandro stood immediately.
"What?"
Valeria looked at him.
May you like
Her eyes widened.
"I think my water just broke."
